I have just found a great way to clean my tack and I mean really clean it. For years I did the whole clean off with warm water then saddle soap or oil if needed. Well after a great day cross country with my 4 year old, my tack was in such a state, covered in mud and god knows what.
Well i washed in warm water, but tack still looked really dingy so I got a bar of Tescos own pure soap, glycerin based. cleaned it again and the difference in the leather was amazing. Then continued to saddle soap as usual. Tack has never been so clean.:D

Or, do what I do.
Take 1 new saddle in August. Put on numnah and ride on waterproof cover. Put stirrup irons on so that irons are outside of the cover. Ride. Change numnah when sweaty. Take 1 clean saddle at Christmas, and clean it anyway, before putting cover back on.
Works like a dream, although mine is made from good leather and I do regularly check to see if it needs oiling, but it never really does. ;)

I thought you shouldn't keep a waterproof cover on a saddle as it stops the leather breathing and encourages damp conditions inside?

I've never had a problem, and my saddle is kept somewhere dry so damp isn't an issue. I've cleaned it more since christmas as it's been used more and I've had more motivation to do it, but it still looks like new, and in much much better condition than the same saddle I had before it did after the same amount of time.
Although now that I think about it, when I say waterproof, that is debatable, so the leather can probably still breathe.

Sounds good even though I have never heard of it. I don't know if what I do is bad or good but I take everything apart, whipe with warm water that had disinfectant and dhishwashing liquid in it, hose it off then let it dry, leather condition it and then put it back together. My bit needs just wiping with a damp cloth every so often cos grass and saliver get all over it.

LOL unless your pony rips it down from the railing at the pony club and pees on it  . Yea I have a synthetic saddle that I still clean and condition just cos I want things to last.

hi
I Love tack cleaning as well, just got back from a show wiv my 3 horses and well its enough to put you off cleaning tack for life,
3 saddles, 1 side saddle, 3 bridles, 2 inhand bridles, loads of boots ect... the worse is the 2 horses that compete in cross country and jumping they are always very muddy but found if i do them all regually they stay clean, and less to do at night,
i must admit i hate cleaning bridles, love saddles :)

I love tack cleaning, saddles, bridles anything! The only thing that bothers me is the feel of dried hard saddle soap mixed with warm water on your hands.
Simply, just wear gloves :D

I'm also one of those tack-cleaning lovers. I just clean my tack with saddle soap and a sponge every time I ride, and take it apart and reallyclean it every week or so.

when tack cleaning though you need to remember to feed the leather too as it is essentially skin at the end of the day and saddle soaps do not do this so invest in something that is fat based too like jefferies leather care instead of using leather oil (this has been drummed into me by one of the reps for a bridle company at the saddlers i worked at since day one!!)

I love it! I'm so nitpicky. I think XdenbyX gets a bit bored when I make her clean tack when she comes to mine though.... :D
