Three weeks ago tomorrow, I was due to ride Phoenix for the first time since April, but I chickened out due to a storm. I was disgusted with myself! Then I went to the Royal Highland Show and watched kiddies riding with ease and I felt even worse.

Over the weekend, I made a decision and on the Monday (two weeks ago today), I went up to the yard and announced that I was riding Phoenix. Yard owner was gobsmacked.

Since then, I've ridden him quite a few times and I'm walking and trotting him with comparative ease. His tendency to turn his head to the left and veer to the right when on the right rein is gradually getting better. He's listening to me, he seems to be getting confidence from me and we're having a complete ball!

To cap it all, I've been riding him down the road from the yard and back alone! Today I managed to get him to the end of the road, about a quarter of a mile, with a horse led in hand in front!

I can't believe the change that's come over me and Phoenix! If he spooks, I don't panic, I calm him down. If he trots unexpectedly, I'm able to bring him back to walk easily and his steering is getting better and better. When he takes the mick, I'm firm and insist.

Today he followed the in hand horse out of the school when he shouldn't have and I had quite a time getting him back in. Managed it on the third attempt using lots of leg and voice. Then I managed to stop him doing it again on the next circuit!

I plan to be cantering him within two weeks, I have a fitness programme worked out for him and my goal is to pop him over cross poles by the end of the summer.

For the first time in ages, I feel like a rider! Yeehaaaaa!

Thats really good news.Sometimes you need to give yourself a kick up the proverbial to make progress and it sounds like you have finally gotten to the roots of your loss of confidence and are dealing with it firmly and with real guts and determination. Well done!

I rode Phoenix on Tuesday night in my regular lesson. This time I rode him in the outdoor school and I had an audience of four, two of whom were taking photos and videos. I was really nervous, but Phoenix was fine, if a bit forward.

Then we went a walk down the road as part of the lesson and this time we were accompanied by another rider. Phoenix was a pest and tried to nap back a few times, but with RI and the mother of the other rider behind, we managed to get to the end of the road.

The other horse and rider were continuing further, but Phoenix and I turned back. What a nightmare! Phoenix immediately became panicky and would have bolted for home if RI hadn't been on the ground and keeping a firm grip of the right rein. To make matters worse, a car came along and when we halted on the bend for the car to pass, Phoenix backed towards the ditch. RI said I could get off if I wanted, but I decided to stick on and persevere.

We continued back along the road and Phoenix calmed down when he could see home. By the time we got back to the yard, he was dawdling and I had to leg him on!

I'm so pleased that I coped with it and it hasn't put me off riding him. I'm desperate to get back on, but the weather has been far too hot. I think I'll make an attempt at riding him early Monday morning before it gets too warm, probably in the indoor school and then a wander up the road, this time solo.

I'm trying to put in a couple of piccies. If it doesn't work, can someone advise? Please ignore my riding position, I was a bit uptight and anxious.
