Because your legs will rub raw from the saddle!
I will occasionally ride in shorts bareback however...

Probably because they don't offer any protection from rubs, knocks etc. If you wear long boots then they are likely to rub your legs and if you wear joddie boots then if you are out hacking you could get cut to ribbons on thorns etc!

In summer I ride in shorts most of the time although I wear long boots as well, the only problem I have is that sometimes the stirrup leathers pinch that only really happens when I jump or canter.

it's very painful. i once got roped into taking a hack when i;'d popped in for a visit in shorts. i took the stirrups off the saddle altogether, it was still very painful and i had bruised red legs for about a week.

Because I would scare anyone looking away!
My friend wears shorts and chaps (to protect legs from stuirrup leathers). Looks quite hilarious.

If you'd seen my legs you'd know why :)
When I was young, slim and beautiful ... ok, forget the beautiful ;) I used to ride out bareback in a bikini. I'd be arrested if I did that these days for GBH to the eye :)
Riding in a saddle can be SORE if you've just got skin next to the leather. Some treed saddles rip my legs to bits even with joddies on, my SBS doesn't but I can't see that it would be very comfortable in just shorts.
It would be nice, though, as my arms don't match the rest of my body (no comments please ....).

My friend wore long shorts with chaps and fell off quite badly. She got really bad arena burns from where she hit the floor which she probably wouldn't have had with jods or jeans on. I never wear shorts, mainly as i find them uncomfortable to ride in, but also because i always stick by the fact that too much skin on display when riding means more aches and bruises if you happen to fall off.

Works just fine if you ride western.:) The fenders on a western saddle don't pinch like the leathers on an english saddle. I've ridden english in shorts, too - I just wear half-chaps with.
Although the better solution I've found is to order some of those breeches made for hot weather - they're some kind of really thin special material that keeps you cool. Boink does some that are really nice - but only for women, sorry.
Someone must make summer breeches for men?

Hehe, my mate does too. Take a look at this (http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b137/jenren22/Missie6.jpg).
I have never actually rode in shorts (i have been riding years) and i never would to be honest. Riding in jeans is bad enough, i couldnt cope with shorts as well . I think you'd get nice tanned legs and is cooler but they'd just rub, especially with my saddle. I know jodhpurs are hotter but i'd rather be hot yet comfy than cool yet sore.

 would never have the guts to do that stormchaser!!!!
even WITH undies!
Have ridden out in a bikini top before but got scratched by thorns and the like and came back a fetching shade of red---smeared blood!!
I have relatively thin cream jodhs that i wear which are pretty cool but my hat is just murder!! I have a stunning, sweaty, hair-stuck-to-head look after riding....but better than a smashed in head i guess!

Ouch is the word that springs to mind. However I did have a child turn up to ride in a sundress and sandals  Very cross parents when I wouldn't let her.
