The 11 year old gelding I just bought has been trying things since we moved him. The settling in really is no problem, he just has a new owner and thinking he can be rude with me.

I got my trainer to start the parelli level 1 exercises and within minutes, there was a different horse in front of us there. He had the shortest attention span of any adult horse I'd ever seen. hehehe

After 25 minutes I saw a horse looking to us (trainer mostly) for direction, was alert and secure and obediant. I'm amazed and looking forward to working through these small issues we have together.

The yoyo game (backing up upon energy in the rope) took probably 6 times for him to figure it out. Trainer said the hypersensitive arab babies she's been workign with take about 3 usually. He's an adult and has been allowed to be pushy for quite a while with two kid owners previously.

Bash parelli all you want (or don't if you choose) but I honestly feel like it gave me something to work *with* him so much safer.

Congrats! Glad to hear that the system is working for you :)

I personally don't like the system as it simpley doesn't work for the horses I work with .. fair enough. But if it works for you - stick with it :) Just be prepared for the conciquences that come with each method :)

Glad to hear your doing well

Great to hear that Parelli is working with your new horse! :D

I've owned my horse for about half a year, and when I first got her she was very rude and pushy. I started to play some games with her, and she completely changed.

As for Parelli bashers: I don't know why they hate him...he's done so much for so many horses :) Even if it doesn't work for your own horse, someone somewhere has a happier horse because of Parelli.

That's great! It's always worked wonders on all the horses I know. It's all about standing your ground, and not letting them walk over you.

I'm so infuriated with the people at my yard. Most of the owners let their horses push them around at *all* times!! I spend most of my afternoons shooing them out of Mouse's yard. I would never let Mouse push people around like that.

Out of interest - are you doing the parelli program too, or are you leaving it to the trainer?

Good! My horse was exactly the same. But now i've had him 2 and a bit yrs and we now have a perfect partnership. I love him to bits and we have respect for each other. We have overcome many problems. And i am now really gratefull that i didn't send him back!

Good for you!
It's a natural thing to have pushy new horses, as we did . I am glad to hear Parelli is working great for you. I think that new horses/owner , have some sort of getting-to -know each other period in which both horse and rider are looking further into each other. I have to admit, our first day with our new horses turned up into a huge mess! They were uneasy with us leading them out.. and my daughter and i were unsure we were doing the right things, guessing their reactions....and they ended up spooking and running out of our hands! It was quite silly as we ran about the barn trying to catch them!
But in the 3 months we've had them... both sides have learned a lot and I think a sense of trust finally developed between us. It takes some time, but no matter what you do, or training you use... it all comes down to being patient.

Lots of luck! You will both be just fine.
