I have a coloured 15.1hh 8 yr old traditional cob gelding, he isn't good at jumping, its going to be his first show and I would like it better if I was not riding him!:D so what classes could I do with him in hand? i have been told you can only show youngsters in a 'in hand' class?

Depends on the show - you'll need to get ahold of schedual to find out what they do. Enter him in everything you could - so in-hand coloured, bets turned out.
There are also small ridden classes you can do. Ridden cob is easy and all you need to do it walk, trot and canter as a ride then an individual show piece. I'd be suprised if more than half more in an outline so you won't be the odd one out if he's not too well schooled. Nor if he's messing about. They're very tolerant of stressed horses going sideways bucking;)
You could also do the clear round - you can chose what height, so if he can trot over a 6inch jump you could easly do it - and get a rossete.;)

If its his first show you could enter Handsomest Gelding, Best mane and tail or any other novelty classes so that you can both get used to the showing environment without any pressure.
Goodluck, let us know how you get on :)
ETA: If he is traditional you could do driving type too I took my sisters traditional cob into driving type and he came second out of loads we were very pleased
