View Full Version : Anyone else bad at remembering locations of arena letters?

Not a significant post, but more a question of curiousity. I am dreadful at remembering the letters in the dressage arena. Does anyone else have an issue with this?!

After 3 or more years or riding, I still could not tell you the location of the letters to you right now!  :p On that note, it is a good job I am not into jumping, as I'd stand *no* chance of remembering a course by just walking it once - I would be just hopeless.

I know there are some tricks to remember the letters - some phrases or something. If anyone can share those, or any other tips to remember the letters that would be great! :)

I was taught
All King Edward's Horses Canter Most bravely Forward.
I remembered it fine. What doesnt work is relating it when riding.
I do now know A, X and C.
And am hoping that my brain is gradually absorbing the others. In an outdoor school it is easier, I think. Because I have a clear picture of the tree or bushes or amount of light at each letter.

Does it matter? I used to learn the test with a picture of the arena in front of me, and learnt where I was going, not where the letters were - so even though I could never remember it didn't matter!

If you're being instructed you can look and check...

I'm slightly dyslexic, so I really struggle to remember where any of them are, though I can now manage A, C and X.... or the 'E side' or 'B side' of the school. When our RI issues instructions I'm usually too busy looking around to find the letters to fully listen to what she's asking us to do!

Too many letters for me. One reason im not a massive fan of dressage - too much like English at school :D

All King Edward's Horses Can Make Big Fooshies (or any othe "F" word to signify flatulence)

The boys in my one classes love that one!

I made them learn only the middle letters to start off with & they had to come up with a saying. They came up with: Alligators Eat Candy Bars

I thought that was pretty clever. Can't remember what the girls came up with.

Interesting the one I learnt was 'A Fat Black Mother Cat Had Eleven Kittens' is clockwise and 'All King Edward's Horses Canter Most bravely Forward' is counter clockwise.

i've been riding for a few years & have a menage at home & would really have to think about it to tell you where the letters are

i remember dressage tests as a sequence rather than where the letters are , which doesn't work out bad when you go to dressage on grass & someone has marked out the arena with the letters in the wrong places:rolleyes:
