If I was going to buy a horse, how much would everything cost. And i mean from complete scratch, including tack and hats and boots etc. I am about 1.9 m tall, so I suspect the horse would have to be fairly big. What are the possibilities for stabling, and does everyone with their own horse have their own stable?

I don't know what sorts of questions to ask, so maybe you could help me out

Hi Alex

I keep my horses on my own land but before i was paying out anything from £45 - £80 per month DIY livery, I have a livery at my yard at the mo on full livery i charge her £100 a week however my friend who is a eventer charges £250 a week full livery! and there are people willing to pay it!

as for tack i usually spend £700+ on a decent saddle and about £100 on a bridle

shavings cost about £5 and i usually put 1 or 2 down a week feed £5 - 7 a bag, rugs cost £50+ and rider clothing all depends on wheather you want the names and logos

hope this helps Ax

Can I tell you what I did I am a typical country bumpkin myself and my best mate got some allotments cost about £100.00 a year we have made our own stables and field shelters by going to wood yards and looking in adtrader etc. You could look for a horse on permanent loan some you can even get with tack and rugs. As for tack and rugs buy good quality second hand tack and rugs in the sales or even second hand.

cost of feed depends on what you feed we get baileys economy mix etc just as good but a touch cheaper. Good quality hay is best but it depends on the horse you can even feed last seasons hay which is a bit cheaper.

I own two horses one of which is a youngster we havent got a great deal of money but we do manage.

I hope I have helped if you need anymore help just send me a private message.

Ta ta joanne;)

Buying/keeping horses is quite expensive ... here's generalized little estimate:
Horse: $5,000 (+ or -, depends on the animal)
Tack: $450 (saddle, bridle, rug, bit, etc)
Stable needs: $200 (blanket, wraps, supplements, etc)
Boarding: $100 a month
Training: $150 a month (if you have a prof trainer do it)
Misc: $1,000/year (hauling, vet emercencies, shoeing, etc)
The perfect companion in the perfect setting: Priceless :D

All of these prices can vary greatly, depending on lots of things.

My horse is boarded out, so I do not have to pay additional for feed or bedding.

board=$125/month
farrier=$60/4 weeks
wormer=$12/6 weeks
vaccinations=$150/year
saddle=$1000
bridle with bit=$150
winter blanket=$100
turnout rug=$250
supplements=$100/month
saddle pads, leg wraps, shipping boots, sheets... =$500/year
first aid kit=$100+/year, throw out any supplies over a year old
helmet=$100
boots=$250-400
vet emergencies=$0-$5000
horse=$500-20,000 (my horse cost $800 when I got her, I did most of the retraining myself and sent her to a pro to be finished. It only took one month and cost $500)

I know there are a bunch of things that I have forgotten, but that is basically all you need if you are just starting. I would reccomend taking lessons though, especially if you do not have much experience. If you plan to show than fees can be quite expensive, believe me, I know.

Cost of keeping mine, which is on Diy is roughly £200 - £250 a month depending on when his shoeing falls. inc feed, hay, straw, stabling.

Thats not taking into consideration any extras such as rugs, new tack, clothing for me etc, use of school.

hi you wll have to look round for prices for fields in your area as they vary quite a bit we can get field and stable for about £10 upwards.It also depends how much experience you have to wether you want full livery or just a field..obviously full livery is more as they do everything for you..you wouldnt have to worry about feeding etc but I think you miss out on alot.Personally I rent a few fields and do it all myself.The feeding and stable issue also depends on the horse..ie a cob type usually dont need as much pampering as a TB and tend to keep weight on easily so can usually live out with shelter.
usually if you go and view a horse tack will be included or negotiable.If not 2nd hand saddles range from£60 up or new synthetics are £130 ish a bridle costs £20 +bit(£5 2nd hand).If you go to the robinsons website or any mail order one and request a catalogue and have a look to see what prices.
you could loan one ..like theo says then decide if its really for you and if you can afford it.
shoes cost £35 up for a set every 6-8 wks.and remember vets charge about £25+ just for calling them out!!
