Technical question: when is the right moment to ask for canter?
The horse I ride is quite responsive, and I just was wondering when to ask for canter so that its easier for him to give me a better transition and not confuse him.
Suppose I'm on the left rein in walk, so I have the sequence of footfalls:
left hind, left fore, right hind, rigth fore etc.
Sould ask for canter when he is about to lift his right hind leg?
Same question for trot-canter, on which diagonal should I ask for canter?
Thanx

Ok walk to canter should be given as he's putting his left fore forwrd as to give him the ability to strike into canter on outside hind. from trot then ask as ouside for is forward. Thats what i was taught anyway, others may disagree.

Well I completely agree with skye06:)
Sould ask for canter when he is about to lift his right hind leg? A bit before this ideally, you always want to give the aid slightly before the outside hind is leaving the ground to give the horse 'processing time!' i.e. as he's putting his left fore forwrd and meets the ground.

Hi
No, the horse leads with the inside fore but strikes off with the outside hind. The reason you put your outside leg behind the girth to ask for canter is because you are stimulating the outside hind to push off into canter.

Thanx a lot for your replies! Really helpfull.
I had some very nice transitions on the right rein. Have to work tho a little bit more on the left one (he does not like working on the left rein, but I am patient enough so hopefully we will get there)

Thankyou for posting this post also because it has helped me learn more about giving aids for transitions :)
