Help What is the single rein stop Does this just mean steering them round to one side?. My new sweet unbroken boy has decided that after a few paces away from home base I'll whiz round and head for home. I have heard many people say the single rein stop is very effective and I would like to have this skill as a back up to stop his new little evasion habits working. Thanks Oldbushy

A single rein stop is basically an emergency brake! Its where you dont pull on both reins, but just on one, to almost separate the horse's neck from the rest of its body (not literally of course ;) ). It disengages the hindquarters and is basically the act of turning a horse on a circle, but with one rein. Its best to practice it in the schools, try it a halt first. But I recommend only using it in emergencies at high speed as it can cause some damage to the horse. Bring one rein uptowards you until your horse's head flexes towards your knee, then try it at walk and so on.

Ahem ... <<drum roll>. ... funny you should ask about that ... :D
The glorious one-rein-stop .. your emergency brake :)
You're aiming to pick up one rein from a gallop and have the horse gently bend round, and slow until he's slow enough to actually swing his back end over, crossing his hind legs as he does so. This takes all the energy out of his HQ and leaves his stopped and soft in your hands.
That's going to take some practice, right ? Aim to be practising for it as part of your general softening, suppling exercises over a few weeks, starting on the ground.
Here's a link cos otherwise everyone will be on to me to stop yabbering on so much ...
