View Full Version : Not quite sure about my position...

Hello to all,
I've recently just watched a video of me riding, and doing some jumping. My overall position is pretty good, leg stays still and I follow the movement of the horse and don't jab his mouth. But I noticed that my upper back looks a little rounded, I'm not sure if this is good or bad thing, or neither! When I stand more in the stirrups my back flattens, but, I noticed that a couple of times I was in front of the movement. I'm comfortable in my first position and it's secure, it requires hardly any effort or adjustment and I find I follow all phases of the jump. If I was to stand up more in the stirrups I have more chance of going in front of the horses movement, if he were to land awkwardly I have a higher risk of saying hello to the floor! Maybe I should try and squash my back down more, but this seems only to stiffen me a little and put me off. With my normal way I slide my bottom to the back on the saddle, fold from the waist, allow with my hands and keep my leg still. I have noticed some riders also have a slightly rounded back and just carry on. Maybe it's just because the way I'm built? What are your views?
Luv to all.:p

That sounds pretty good, but if you want to avoid rounding your back, without stiffening up, imagine you have an extra rib below your last one, and you have to make room for it as you go over the jump!

I'm sorry but I can't imagine that!!:D I noticed I even sit a little rounded in the chair but I am sitting straight! Maybe it's just the way I'm built! Maybe the rib thing makes sense but it's not making it to my brain which hides in an abnormally thick skull!! :D
I must be off, or I'll never get up tomorrow!
Luv to all

Right then, what about letting your belly button drop down towards the pommel as you flex forward, rather than round away?

thinking like someone is pulling on your shoulders and you are sticking your belly out. thats what I do sometimes...on flat i tend to have a "natural arch" not to much but i saw a video of myself riding and on the flat i had a small arch (more than usuall) no the whole time though...i was straight and all and was pretty good legs, ext.... but my back had a small arch (more than usuall). lol
