I've been leasing a warmblood mare for about 6 months now.She is extremely responsive and everything, great manners. I've been having problems with her when I ask for a flying change. Sometimes she speeds up, or hops, or fails to swap behind. One time she bucked. I'm asking by poking her nose a little to the oustide, and putting my inside leg a bit behind the girth and the outside leg at the girth, and giving her a strong nudge/squeeze. I've succeeded in doing it once, but I don't know if it is me or the horse- it could be either. The other horses I have ridden I can almost always ask for a flying change and they will comply... Help? Am I doing something wrong- am I not asking firmly enough, maybe too firmly? Is it the horse, or could it be an underlying problem?

I think we need more info first,

How old is she, was she schooled before, any probs with hocks/back/teeth/saddle/surface/ etc. What's the history?

My instructor is starting to tell me to ask Norton for changes and she tells me to stare at the lead I'm on and ride it straight, you can't have the horse's head bent out or anything and keep him from running out from my hands (since he's a green Thoroughbred). no leaning in and when you get to the corner use outside leg (I don't use alot of outside leg because if I do Norton likes to run threw the corner) and some pull on the inside rein and a little swing to the outside can encourage them to switch.

It's hard to know if it's the horse though. My instructor said if the horse has done them before it's the rider. There's a girl at my barn with a little Dutch Warmblood and she could only get him to do changes by making him crow hop by saying 'stick' in a really high pitched voice and using a little tap with a dressage crop. It was funny watching her do the changes but my instructor said from the beggining that her horse wouldn't do the changes and they even took her to a barn down in Delaware for change training for about 3 months or so and she still can't do them.

Hope it Helps.
