I was having problems with our new gelding a while back and posted on here and got loads of advice.

Well, we took him out of the dutch gag and back into a snaffle and put a running martingale on him, just for that little bit of extra control without the harshness of the bit and we went back to complete basics. Got an Instructor in to give lessons who has over forty years experience and she started teaching our daughter to 'Think' ride and to be firm and what a difference! They are both now up to the stage of collected canter in the school with no taking off and rushing at all. Daughter's confidence and riding ability is now amazing, they are doing short cross country practice together and my daughter has now realised that she IS in control and her gelding has also realised his respect for her now. What a relief when a couple of months ago I was in desperation thinking I would have to sell and that he would still be misunderstood.

Just wanted to say thanks to all of you who helped advise because it was a combination of your advice that made me decide what to try and I now have the pleasure of watching them both ENJOY everything together which it wasn't before.

Thanks to everyone. :D

What a great success story! Congratulations on your progress. It is always nice to hear an update on problems past- especially when they have happy endings!

Wonderful news. I'm glad that you took the challenging but higher road of working with your horse and taking it all back to "first prinicples" instead of labelling him a challenging horse & giving up. Infact - I thank you for this!

Congrats to you, your daughter, and your gelding!

Thanks for all your comments! I was so desperate NOT to sell because he is a genuine pony. Instructor who is teaching our daughter now AND spends time talking to me explained that she thinks (as was said on advice here) that he is a very forward pony and was being misunderstood by having stronger bits put into his mouth etc which made the problem worse (it wasn't us by the way he came to us in a Dutch gag and flash noseband at 6 years old). Anyhow, he is on his way with daughter and it is fantastic to see them both happy, next year here we come! :)
