Hi, my name is Crissy. I live in Kentucky, and am presently saving for my first horse. The question I wanted to ask is, Do white horses get saddle-burn? I read that they did, but wanted to ask you guys to see what you thought. Any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated.:)

I'm not sure what saddle burn is (I don't think it's a UK term). Could you explain the symptoms?

Best wishes

Sally

I don't know the symptoms all I know is that it is when a horses saddle rubs on a place on it's back and rubs away the skin and then there is a sore.

Any horse who's saddle rubs will end up with a sore patch - not just greys. However, I believe that grey horses have more sensitive skin - but mainly to sunlight and mud - it is quite common for white legged horses to suffer more from mud fever than dark horses and for white muzzled horses to suffer from sunburn.

I have a dark bay TB, who used to race and he has a sore patch on his withers - its been there since before I got him and was caused by his racing saddle rubbing.

It is therefore very important to have your saddle fitted to your horse - and have it checked on a regular basis to make sure it doesn't rub or is too tight. A badly fitting saddle can not only cause rubbing and sore patches, but can lead to damage of the back muscles, spine etc.

Ow! That has to hurt a horse, right? I mean we as humans wouldn't be able to bear that. Can horses?
