I went out to the barn on Friday night to ride my boy, only to find him limping severly. After bursting into tears for a few moments, I figured out which leg it was (Right Fore), felt it, and found his forearm to be hot. It was a swollen too, but not by much. There was also a slight scrape in the familiar shape of a hoofprint, so I assumed he was kicked. Anyways, I cold hosed it for 30 mins, put on liniment on it, and kept him on box rest. I also gave him bute. I've been repeatinf this, except I hose it 3X a day for 30 mins, and turn him out in the round pen for 2 hours for exercise.....am I handling this right?? He's gotten better, most of the heat is gone, but it's still swollen. And he's walking a LOT better. Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks!

what you are doing is fine:) if there was a cut/broken skin bathe it warm salt water to prevent infection and keep the wound clean and tidy. You could also use lavander to prevent scaring toward the end of the healing process if you show your horse at all. (make sure your horse likes the smell of any oils used so they don't throw a wobbler when they smell like an airfreshener:D) Also make sure when the horse is turned out its not running around then it will be safe to turn out for much longer, even if it is with another horse as the circulations can reduce the swelling but the horse much be quiet and not kick to make the situation worse. after a week or so of treating the leg yourself if there is no improvement phone the vet!!! there may be more damage done that meets the eye,

Good luck and i hope your horse gets better soon :)

Just wanted to send best wishes - the advice in the previous post sounds very sound so nothing much else to add.
