Again -I need some help on working out my pony budget. How much are you all paying for hay or haylage, and how much would a 12.2hh pony need each month?
Thanks.

I pay £2.50 a bale, I have a 15hh irish cob, he doesn't have alot of hay thru the summer, but come autumn /winter he will scoff around half a bale a night

If you can still find hay off the field (bit late in the year now...), and have room to store it, and some way to collect it, then you should probably expect to pay £1.25 - £1.50 per bale. A 12.2hh would get through maybe 3-4 bales per week, stabled at night with ad-lib hay. Large haylage bales are approx £10-£15 each in my neck of the woods, but unless you share them, they'll go off before you have chance to finish them with one horse. Small bales of haylage cost £5-7 each, and will do 2-3 nights:eek:

My 12.2 pony only goes through about 2 bales a week, but he is a very good do-er.He is out all day in the winter & in at night.

we are £2.50 per square bale and buy 50 at a time. This was lasting a pony and a horse about 3-4 months in the summer and 2-3 months in the winter, so would last a 12.2hh a bit longer :)

The little fat 12hh welsh at our yard gets 1-2 sections per night (he is out in the day) so he eats 1-2 bales per week in winter.
We pay £2.50 collected or £3 delivered for standard square bales.

Thanks - Frayne will be out 24/7. I have budgeted for 6 bales per month @ £2.50 per bale, so then she can have a slice of hay if needed out in the field and when travelling. I can always up this and perhaps give her some high fibre feed (Happy Hoof or something similar?) when she has lost some weight and being ridden more.
