View Full Version : Treating lamness in a 2 year old...

Our 2 year old pony was a bit lame coming in from the field this morning...
What would you recommend?
I checked him over closely for cuts, but apart from a slight reaction when I ran my hands down his leg he didn't show any pain or anything.
He let me lift his feet as usual etc.
I'm wondering if he maybe had a kick as the horses seemed extra lively this morning. But if it was it's likely only bruising. Or perhaps he's twisted it?
Either way... should i let him out, keep him in, and is there anything I should be doing?
Thanks for any tips.

Splint?
I'll let the online vets advise, I don't want to give you out of date info.
Hope it passes soon :)

mmm seems a bit extreme.. Thanks though. :)
He's able to walk on it,but is a little tentative when he steps thats about the extent of it.
I've laiden up his bed so it's lovely and deep - it's always deep anyhow so now he's like the princess and the pea! lol
Also keeping him in tonight in the hope rest helps.
Will speak to the vet tomorrow if it's still bad.

Perhaps he was having a good old run around, the ground is a bit slick on top but still hard underneath.
Cuddle him up in his nice deep bed and see how he is tomorrow.
Make sure you dont worry too much (I know you will)lol
Hope he's better soon

Thanks Vic & Ang :)
Sadly he's still limping a little today, it's only a bit, and not as bad as yesterday.. so keeping him in again.
Horses were running well again last night so it's just as well he wasn't out there.
As you say he may have been running a bit too much.
There is no swelling, heat or sign of pain to the touch so that's good...
He'll just have to put up with being in for a few days! might let him out for a 20-30 minute exercise later. Just hope he behaves like the gent he normally is when being caught. :p
Will keep you posted!

if he has tweeked something twiting about or had a knock, you may find that gentle exercise will help loosen it up, is there a quiet paddock he could go out in, for a couple of hours?

I would cold hose it a couple days, just in case.

He's still a little stiff, but i let him out earlier and he ran riot in the field!
I returned half an hour later, and he was just gently grazing....
hoping that he's ok in the morning... he's not one for charging around most of the time.. i think it was just because he'd been in for 2 days! :p
Fingers tightly x'd...
