Whenever Aramis has had her feed, or treats or anything sweet, she starts licking the wall, the gate (if she had something at the gate) or the stable door. She's done this ever since i got her (nearly a year) and it's never really concerned me, in fact, i've found it quite sweet, but does anyone know why she does this? hmm

I don't know Jenren? but it beats having the velvety face wiped on you when it looks like this  http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h148/dftighe/1166fb81.jpg
However hard I try to avoid the nose , someone at some stage at the yard asks if I know that I have poo stains up my back! I hate to think what people think when I go to the shops after!:o

Grady used to do it to...normally along the top of the stable door.

I don't know the answer Jenren, but I wonder if you offered her a lick block after her feed whether that would satisfy her need.
My mare's idea of heaven is a pile of hay, a bucket of water and a mineral lick - she takes a bit of hay, dips it in the water, has a brief chew, then a lick of mineral-lick, and then finishes her mouthful before starting the whole business again. Maybe a mineral lick to her is like tomato ketchup or mayonnaise to us! :D

A horse on my yard does that when you give him mints lol. But hes always done it and doesnt bother with mineral licks, its just his 'thing' lol.

Mine does it especially after her morning apple usually on the door. Think it demonstratates some equine behavioural need as she was quite distressed when we moved yards to find her new door was all wooden and splintery along the top and she was prevented licking. It is almost a reflex reaction ..like grooming you when you scratch an itchy bit.
Is it maybe something that stems back from foalhood ie. licking the mares udder to produce more milk?

My horse does this too. I have tried all sorts of licks but he still prefers to lick the door or the wall. He has done it the whole 4 years I have had him and it hasn't done any harm so I don't worry about it. Not sure why they do it though.

my friends horse was a serial licker after having food! if he couldn't get to the door or a wall he'd lick your leg! i think it's just one of those funny things our horsies do!
