help! am going to have to get kez onto the same worming regieme as toby is on. my plan is to keep him seperate from toby (in an acre paddock just over the fence from tobs) until i've had a worm count done. I know kez was wormed on thursday last week, and he's been worm counted but obviously with him being on a big yard he will have an inherantly higher count than toby, who's only been with bonnie this past 2 years. would it be safe to worm kez so soon after he's been wormed by the stud? which wormer would be best? my friend suggested the 5 day equine guard.

Don't bother with the 5 day IMO, I used it for my filly when we got her, when she was given an ivermectin dose next she had tonns of roundworms then when she was worm counted she had tonns of the strongyles too. There is known to be a major reststance to panacure in the UK, some areas are worse than others.
I was told by the vet that unless it is a wormed stating that it can be used for double dosing the minimum gap should be 4 weeks between doses but unless you really have to leave it the full recomended gap (6-8 weeks or what ever). You shouldn't give equest anything less than 13 weeks, its very strong, and as little as 5 times the recomended dose can be fatal, so even a little too much could cause problems.
I would worm count asap, before you get him home if you can....darn you have to wait 14 days after worming don't you so that won't work. At least once its done you know where you stand, you may be lucky and he is clear and could go straight out but you may find their wormer has not been effective and you need to keep them seperate (and his field cleared daily etc to prevent infecting the land) until he is due for worming again.

i had read about the resistance to that 5 day stuff. guess i'll just keep them seperate until i can have a count done. they will still be able to speak over the stable wall :)

If he's wormy, putting him on your pasture will get worms in the pasture, even if he's separated from the other horse. If you're poo-picking that should help.
When we brought a new horse in, my vet recommended dosing with ivermectin two weeks in a row before bringing him onto the property.

according to his breeder, his last worm count (taken in last 2 weeks) was clear and he was wormed on thursday. we poo pick daily. am i maybe better keeping him indoors for a few days then?

Well the breeder seems nice enough, can you ask her for a copy of the count results? if she seems offended or anything can you just say the land owners require it before new horses are turned out and you don't want to keep the poor boy in ;) :D
If you can avoid keeping him in I would, only because I know how it effected Jess when I did, I kept her in for the aforementioned 5 day wormer and now she gets quite stressy about being in a stable, I think it was where the others were coming and going and being young all she wanted was to be with the herd during that stresfull settling in period. But if you have to you have to :o

When is he arriving? I think I'd be inclined to worm him once more before he arrives and not worry about it if I didn't have any worm count results. Since you do have a clear worm count, I am not sure what you're worried about in terms of worm burden.

i'm slightly concerned about just how accurate the worm results will be because she has them done at our vets and i get mine done with westgate. my friend got me all wound up saying i should worm him asap. he's arriving thursday morning. i'm probably worrying about nothing :o

So ask you vets, they gave permission for you to pull his med history didn't they? and the vets will do just as good a job or they probably send them to WG anyway  :D
