My 4 year old mare cut the top of her leg on some wire over a week ago. It was about 4 ins long and quite deep. I called the vet and she after much sedative managed to put 4 stitches in. She gave me a weeks antibiotics and bute. The week passed and despite bathing it carefully twice a day it was still messy, so I asked the vet to visit again. She thought it was healing well and gave her another weeks antibiotics and said to call her back in 10 days to take the stitches out. We are 5 days on and it is still messy and swollen. How long does this sort of injury take to heal?

If the vet thinks it's fine then it probably is. I foudn that wounds can weep for weeks, it's a sign of healing as it is flushing out all the gunk.
Just keep doing what you are doing.

Thanks for that re-assurance. The vet is due out on Thursday to take out the stitches. Will it hurt? I am a bit concerned for the vets welfare as she can cow kick if you hurt her. She lets me bathe the wound but I have to be very gentle and distact her with a tasty feed.
