I went for my first ever hack today (with RI) and really enjoyed it.I was riding thomas 14.2 black Fell/dales type.we did lots of trotting and cantering(still holding onto the saddle with one hand). thomas's saddle is synthetic so I find it really slippery.(its also quite small so I must get some jods without a seam underneath for the next hack:eek:) Its nice to try some long straight canters though instead of half a side of th.e school after about 5 tries. Near the start of the ride thomas did a massive spook cos there was a man up a tree in his garden who decided to start noisily sawing just as we rode past, anyway I managed to control it ok so I was quite pleased.
When I got back I had a grooming lesson, to follow on from the mucking out on I had earlier in the week, I enjoyed them both, though OH said I must be mad to pay to muck out a horse!
So I feel that this week I've made some progress on the long road to learning to care for a horse.

sounds great. I like cantering out on hacks so much more than doing it in the school! Nice that you get to chance to groom and muck out at your RS, I would happily pay for that but my school don't really do it :p

It's such a shame you never get to that at a RS usually. It's all the H&S Regs we have these days.

When I first started sharing before I got my own horse, I was mortified that apart from knowing very little about stable management, I couldn't even tack up!

V brave cantering on first hack I have to say. It took me a while before I cantered Daisy out on the open fields, I was worried I wouldn't be able to stop her and I turned out to be right. What a white knuckle ride that was.

Well done.

Well done, that's fantastic!

As much as I love schooling nothing beats a good hack in the countryside :D

Also, I think its great that you're so willing to learn to muck in (excuse the pun!) with the stable management side of horses too!
