connemaras are ponies - they're one of the M&M breeds.
friesian, morgan, caspian.

Erm....isn't the Caspian supposed to be a small horse as opposed to a pony?

yes a connie is a pony, but more of a horse than a typical pony, in my eyes anyway.

arent fresians rather large horses? im thinking more the 14.2 mark that look/act like horses rather than ponies

cobs, welsh d's, arabs, anglo arabs I'd say my welsh d is a big oversized pony rather than a small horse. People often think he's smaller than he is (15hh) because he's so pony like in looks, intelligence and attitude:rolleyes: .

Cobs aren't horses or ponies - they're cobs.

Friesians are usually about 15hh.

Also Knapstrups, cobs (not a breed technically but they are small horse sized), Hackneys and Mustangs.

Standardbred aren't small horses - the smallest they usually go is 14.2hh, the average is 15.2 and I've met a couple of 17hh ones. Not all that little;)

fells and dales are ponies, fells are very pony like and dont ususally get over14 - 14.2hh but overheight dales can reach 15hh and can be like riding a small horse but are still ponylike if you get what i mean!

So can someone please define the term, 'Small horse'?

I'm getting confused!

It seems the term pony and horse is interchangeable depending on what bred society and to whom you speak.

In the dictionary a pony will be an equine 14.2hh and under, a horse over 14.2hh.

IN the horse world a pony is a bit of a nebulous thing, as Icelandics, Haflingers, Caspians, Fjords, (and the list goes on and on) are all under 14.2hh but are all described as horses, there is no word for pony in Icelandic. If you speak to an old Shetlander he will refer to big horses (anything other than a Shetland) and small horses, a Shetland, there is no dialect word for pony in Shetland.

So use whatever term you choose, I tend to refer to ponies as being specifically kid's mounts and small horses are bred for adults and might not be suitable for children at all.

Really it's up to you and your breed society to decide whether you breed ponies of small horses, it really doesn't matter a tinker's cuss in the great scheme of things :D :D :D
