View Full Version : Which rug?

Pardon my ignorance folks.... just after some advice so I know I have come to the right place.....;)
Last winter Cherry was still on her walk/trot only (in recovery from a tendon injury) so she wasn't clipped and did absolutely fine in her summer lightweight Masta rug when turned out. She didn't wear a rug when stabled overnight and had a luverly thick coat - she had a haynet overnight and a small token gesture feed of a half-scoop of Happy Hoof and maintained her weight. Good-doer??? As the Churchill dog says... "Oooooh Yeeees!":p
This winter, she should be in "normal" work so I am thinking that I will be having at LEAST a bib clip, possibly a low trace.... can anyone tell me what kind of weight of rug she might need? I think I will invest in a neck cover as I really got fed up with the mud "dreadlocks" in all that mane (and don't even get me started with all that feather which was only half-grown last winter  )
Thanks peeps :)

It may just be a case of seeing how she gets on, with a bib she could be ok with the l/w turnout but with a trace you may have to go with a m/w. She may need a thin stable rug or a fleece to compensate for the hair you've taken off. All if's and maybe's, I'm more used to the skinnier clipped TB's over winter so I'm not really much help

She could do just as well in just the lightweight sheet you have already if she is a good doer. If not then a 200g will suffice - Silvers thickest rug last winter was a 200g and he had a 'personal' clip - sort of bib, sort of trace thing. He was toasty warm. If you kept her in the lightweight (possibly up to a 200g for night time as she can't keep herself warm by moving - you can get a fleece or a 150g stable rugs) she might need her feed upping a little.
We went all out and bought a 350g combo rug for the really cold weather and a 300g stable rug and they've never ventured out of their bags! still debating what to do with them...

I do have a light to medium weight stable rug which is all clean and waiting for this winter and I have a fleece which I could use underneath if she gets tucked up in her stable so I'm prepared in that respect... I just wondered whether to get a med-weight turnout just in case.... perhaps I'll log onto to my best friend auction website and see if I can get a second-hand one .....
Thanks

you're probably better off just putting the fleece under the lightweight turnout if she gets a bit cold. Not only cheaper than buying a m/w, but multiple layers tend to be warmer than a single thicker rug (all that circulating air)

I would invest in a medium weight rug to be honest, saves messing around double rugging and making safe under rugs.
I would say an Amigo m/w with full neck would be good. Its 200g, 1200 denier and the neck has no filling. It has leg arches etc and Horseware recommended it to me rather than there Rhino range. Its £75 but I have just bought them for minnie and podge and they fit the hippos very well.
Or if you want a cheap one you could get second hand Rhinos, what size is she?

Feathers might stop mud fever though!:o
Adam has a lightweight which he wears for about one month at the end of September, then he goes into a mediumweight and then about December he goes into a heavyweight - can't remember when the stable rug goes under it:eek: and then back down again throught the weights until the end of April and then it's rugs off whatever the weather:D He lives out all year round at night. He's a lightwieght cob.

when bonnie had a bib, she didn't need a rug at all, even in the coldest snowy weather. Her thick coat kept her really cozy. See how she goes but you may need little more than a l/w.
