Hi everyone :)
Does anybody have any good mane-saving tips for the winter? A combination of rugs and possibly fencing (scratching/finding grass the other side perhaps) has lead to my horses' manes' slaughter!
It probably isn't as bad as some can get, having seen a few others at my yard, but all the same - are there ways of preventing it?
Here she is:

(It used to be the same length all the way along as the far right!:o
Thanks:)

I dont think there is much you can do about it, but a few tips..you can try and get a rug with a full neck with a good lining and make sure its a good fit over withers and neck, dont brush her mane unless nessersary and when you do use a de-tangler so you dont have to brush as much. I think they do turnout hoods now so that may be an idea.:)

Hi,
My horse has a very long, thick mane, because I always keep it tied up (short) in an arab/stallion plait;) . Because its always tied up, I rarely need to brush it. Hence, I'm not always pulling it out. I only take it out to tidy it up once a month. Then I either wash it, or spray it in mane conditioning spray, and tie it up again. I have found the Wahl one to definately be the best.
I will try to find a picture for you to see.:) . His mane comes right down his shoulder when its down.

star has turnout rugs with neck covers with a nylon lining to prevent rubbing and at night he wears a lycra hood and it keeps his mane lovely and clean and flat

Thanks, guys.:)
I'm considering a turnout hood, nat17, but as Bella has just come off of working livery onto grass (YAY!!:D THANK YOU MUM!) everything is so much more expensive.:( And plaiting sounds like a great idea, sheryl, but the bit that gets rubbed out has been rubbed too short to be sufficiently plaited! Believe me - oh have I tried! lol. And I also have good rugs with good necks jovi_y2k2.
Thanks!

I have the same problem, Bo looks just the same. With him it is where he sticks his head through the fence to find the best grass  No amount of extra hay in the field or plaiting or neck covers stops it :(
The only thing I can think to do is run electric fence so he can't stick his head through the rails of the wooden fence, but our YO isn't keen :(
