My horse has a lot of his frog peeling away on one hoof and yesterday a big chunk fell off right down to the sole at the point of his frog. He is not lame and there is no smell which I would expect from thrush. His frog is trimmed by the farrier and hooves are picked out daily. I have used some of the aloe vera purple spray on it. Is this usual to have such a large chunk coming away from the frog? Is it down to the change in the weather as it has suddenly gone from hoof being dry to wet?

Any tips to help the frog to regrow? Should I get the vet out even though he is not lame?

thrush is black, and you should be able to smell it. If it does not smell then it may be some other kind fo fungus. Ask your ferrier about it, surely he/she will have an asnwear.

Probably just normal shedding frogs but worth putting some kind of thrush treatment on there when frogs are shedding as there can be pockets where thrush can lurk. Have a good rummage around with a hoofpick then sniff it, if you turn green then there's thrush :D

Aramis's frog has started shredding, and the other 3 i handle regularly as well. Its not thrush, youd know if it was. Shredding of the frog, to me, seems perfectly normal and if some is hanging off, just snip it off with scissors.
