I've put this on the general forum too but I will check both. I've got a problem with Skye again!
She catches the inside of her left hind hoof, right on the ball, just above the shoe at the back. She does it with her other hoof, we think, both when we ride, but also when she is in the field cantering around. Today her foot was all blood and raw. Ive put some tea tree ointment and managed to get a dressing to stay on using animalintex, sticky bandage and a bit of duck tape for top protection, but how do I go on from here when it heals again.

Are there any hind leg boots which would come far enough down to stop her catching that part of the foot right at the bottom, and what do I do about her in the field? presumably she can't wear boots 24 hours a day.

Any help much appreciated to stop me finding a bleeding foot. It looks awful, raw and sore and I feel so upset.

Hi,

Has she always done this,or has it started recently?

My friends cob wears overreach boots on the hinds in the field for the last 2wks ,and seems fine with it.She uses the velcro closure, rubber type. They are taken off overnight as he is stabled then.Someone has recently had a thread about this, and other suggestions were sausage boots (Those things that look like a dogs rubber ring!) as even though these go around fetlock above hoof, they can keep the horse from brushing his legs close enough to strike hoof.

i agree with wonder horse, overreach boots on the hind legs you may get some funny looks but its better than a bloody foot! :)

Yep, overeach boots in my opinion to.

My horse used to brush his front hooves together and cut into his coronet with the other foot, I used the "rubber ring" thing mentioned by Wonder Horse above, it worked wonderfully, however I did get some odd comments as he only wore it on one hoof.. I used to tell people it was his wedding ring..;)

i have changed farrier and my boy has had some dramatic changes to his feet (typical thoroughbred feet). He advised me to put on overeach boots (i have used the neoprene ones) they are on 24 / 7 and i have had a little bit of rubbing but it has cleared up and they are fine. He usually get the same thing on his front feet if we go out for a fast hack! or hes charging around in the field!

Thanks for the help. I bought some sausage rings today and will try those. I have some neoprene overreach boots for my cob so if the rings don't work I'll try the others
