His father was Tinky Winky as pictured below.

This is the colt I'm interested in, can you tell from this what colour is he likely to be as an adult?

that I dont know, am viewing it Friday, they dont have the Dam at the stud anymore it was sold earlier in the year but they have pictures.
I've recently lost my gelding and he was grey and ended up covered in Melanoma's really cant cope with going through that again so am avoiding greys, I love them dont get me wrong but emotionally it was very tough.

I have a feeling this one you're looking at might go grey, how old is he? he's not of dissimilar colouring to my yearling, who was that colour a while back...
This is Regan (His dad is Liver Chestnut and his mum is flea bitten grey) He will go flea bitten grey eventually. Remember the mum's genes are normally more dominant, so if mum is grey highly likely this little lad will be too.

looks grey to me i'm afraid. if you can see any younger pics and he was darker, then he will be going grey.

have a look here (http://www.newrider.com/forum/showthread.php?t=47385) for more info on greys and how the colour develops from foals upwards

thanks everyone, I dont know how old he was in that pic but he's advertised as a black/bay colt born 2005.
I'll see what happens on Friday and chat with them, obviously I'll have a vet check done would they be able to indicate colouring or could it be anyones guess?

Good luck, he looks lovely, be prepared to fall in love and also be prepared that he may go grey if you did decide to purchase him. Regan was born bay.:)

well, they'll know if he has lightened at all so far, so that is one indication. if he was born 'black/bay' though - he must have done, he is nowhere near black inthat pic.

Almost certainly going grey.
baxter - the mum's genes are not more dominant when it comes to colour. A horse has two copies of every colour gene in it's genetic make-up. Both parents pass on one set of colour genes, which will determine eventual colour. So both parents have exactly the same amount of influence; neither parent is dominant. Some genes however are - grey is one. Either parent passing on a grey gene will cause the foal to grey out - and daddy clearly has that gene to pass on!

I rang the stud and asked them because its been playing on my mind and they are certain he will be bay, how can I know he'll be right?

You can't i suppose, he's so much like Regan in colour, that i would suspect highly he'll go grey.
Sorry Chev - for confusion on Mare's dominant genes, was something i was told, am now corrected.
Kelly - If he is right for you, and you like him, perhaps take the chance. I know you must be worried, but not ALL greys develop melanomas etc... I NEVER wanted a grey horse but i fell in love with my yearling and couldn't resist, conformation, temperament and so on, more than made up for the colour he'll eventually be.
If you are seriously against getting greys, perhaps wipe him form the list and find others to look at, ust so you don't take him home and with each year your little bay starts to go grey.

So does the fact he has white markings on his legs and face not make a difference? I noticed from your colt Baxter that he doesn't have any white markings.

HI Kayjayhorses
Sorry but unable to assist in colouring issues. But like what I see very much. Nice yearling. How big is he now and how big will he get? What is his breeding?

no, white markings make no difference. petal had a star when she was brown.

The white marking just merge into the white, Regan has a white blaze, and a white tiny mark above one of his back hooves.

Judging by his face, he looks like he's turning already, they tend never to get darker , only lighter, my 14 year old bay is now coming through with grey hairs marking his age.... and can you see on your colt that the white marks are not well definied, it's already merging into a lighter colour on his face.
I might be entirely wrong, but would hate for you to thik you had bought a bay horse when he ends up grey.

I have no idea of his breeding will ask questions when I see him tomorrow, he was born 2005 and will make 16 - 16.2.
His dad was a showjumper, father tinky winky, grandfather numero uno.
Stud have his 1/2 brother who will be grey but are convinced this one will be bay. Trouble is I dont know how old the picture is as its off their website so if its not recent he could be different already.
Will take pics on friday.
Thanks for everyones help and sorry to be a pain I just lost my grey and I know not all greys will get melanoma's but its scared me off a little.

I'm really sorry for your loss, and i hope he turns out perfect, he looks a little cracker!!!
Like you say you'll know more Friday, keep me posted please, would love to know what you decide...
PS. unless you intend on breeding, have him gelded asap, a) he'll grow bigger and b) you won't have to put up with coltish behaviour, like i suffered with my monster, who is now an absolute angel, having lost two troublesome things that turned his brain to mush!
Robyn.

The stud will geld him for me free of charge, they have a couple of filly's there too that look nice but as I have 2 mares already thought it would be best to have chap and not another mare.
Will def let you know the outcome, i'm off to see my vet this afternoon to discuss it with them they were so great with my gelding I lost so I really value their advice.

Went to see the colt, but he had such a huge bit mark on its neck that its made a big indentation in the muscle on both sides of his neck, poor little thing, but I've fallen for another one there, a 2005 filly going to make arrangements for a vet check.

Can't see the pic but look for a light ring around the eye, that usually means grey. I love greys. :)
