I have a welsh cob that my mum is pushing me to use for endurance, ive also seen a couple of other welsh ds that have caught my eye whilst casually looking for another horse.
My girl is very opinionated and quite stubborn, but very bold and quite nervous at teh same time. she loves hacking, has a good depth of girth and a nice forward walk and big welsh trot.
What are the breed generally like in endurance rides and such?

I used to compete in long distance events on my old welsh section D (not sure if thats the same as endurance)?. He could last the distance with no problems but because of his lack of speed we couldn't always complete the course within the set time - we still had great fun though!! :D

I found it was usually arabs or arabx that did well in these comps.

I went on a bronze buckle qualifier with Blue Fish and Flyer, who is a welsh section D, and we both got qualifier rosettes (I was riding Fire, who was an Anglo Arab).

So long as you get him fit enough, he'll be fine...

thanks, what distances did you do?

We usually entered the 20 mile rides. If I remember right (it's been a long time ago) it was around 7mph you needed to cover to get within the time limit.

my sction d was all on cantering on a hack!!! he was very unfit tho :o i spose if you got your horse realy fit and just wanted to do it for the fun then that would be great, if you wana win you are going to need a horse with arab in it

thanks:)
My welsh cob is still being backed, so she will go on a few 10 mile pleasure rides before moving upto 20s and then onto competition.
I have a tb ex racer at the moment, who does about 7mph waking speed (yes she walks very quickly), were only on 10s at the mo, but moving upto 20s soon and some comps, if i can get this gates thing sorted, but my girl is 16 now and has pulled a tendon in the past so im worried about it going up again if she competes, so im casually looking for another horse.
I really like my arabs, but they seem to be so expensive, i really like my welsh cob girl, shes a fine one not a chunky one, shes very comfy. I think a welsh d x arab would be my ideal:D

I dont think arabs are the only breed that can do endurance, most people do endurance on arabs, but any horse that has an aptitude for it can do it, i know my tb loves it, and when her feet are right shed wipe the floor with most arabs.

For what you discribe of her temperatment (typical welsh cob  ) she might not be ideal for the higher levels. Any horse who's reasonably fit can do the low level endurance, but they need to have the right mental attitude as well as physical preformance to go further. A horse that stress is not a good endurance horse - they put more energy into worrying than going places. You really need something laidback and chilled (but not lazy)

Arabs and crosses are still the best for endurance - it is what they excel at, plus because of their genetic make up they can cool down more rapidly, and thus get a lower heart rate and recovery period. Essential attributes for higher level endurance.
Terskys, Akhal Tekes are also superb, there are supposed to be a couple of Spanish-breds doing endurance.

You can get cheaper Arabs and Arab crosses and if you go for a youngster you can pick up a better deal.

TB's tend not to perform as well (Although there are a couple doing top level) partly because they are sprinters rather than endurance horses, and partly because they have a tendency for poor feet.

shes actually very bold going out, and doesnt bother with anything, lorries, cars, tractors, open fields new surroundings, which i think is fantastic seen as shes had a secluded (sp?) life on a welsh hill, im not sure how far im going to go in endurance yet, depends on the horse, but would love to get up to some 30s and 40s.
Thats the thing im worried about with maddie, is that she is very highly strung and can get very silly and excitable, not an ideal temprement for endurance, but copes very well with new surroundings and is calming down alot (huge improvement from when i got her)

poor feet and an issue with my girl, shes barefoot;)

Most arab youngsters ive looked at that have lines anything like for endurance are around the £3000 mark, which i really cant afford. The only decent priced arab ive seen with anything that might be good for endurance is the other end of the country, theres a gelding near me who sounds ok, but, hes a gelding, lol.

welsh cobs were used to trot long distances in days of yore i'm sure.in fact i know they used to put a race on every year for the fastest cob to trot a certain distance and it was quite a good distance too. shame i can't remember more about it.
i know they have ooodles and oodles of stamina too.
have a look at the bottom of this page http://www.devonponies.co.uk/welsh-ponies.html
35 miles in trot all the way ;)
that sounds good enough to me :)
just had to add-the welsh trot isn't a slouchy pace-they have amazing ground covering trots that many other horses have to canter just to keep up with.

This must be the ultimate endurance filly - she is lovely, shame she is not a teensy bit bigger.

She has the perfect endurance pedigree. Is it definitely a mare you want No_Angel?

I am still a member of the AHS, still have a few contacts, will keep an eye out for you.

Wonder if I could try my Spanish girl on some low level stuff?

i really would prefer a mare, i seem to get on with them better, love my gelding to bits, but hes a typical man:rolleyes: asks you where his dinner is, farts and burbs, scratches his ass and wonders off:rolleyes:
my other gelding was a hypochondiac and threw himself on the floor at every oppertunity and the uncatchable benji who was sent to be trained by me wouldnt leave me alone and became my stalker:rolleyes: bless him:D
I would especially love an orange girl:D

There is a decent buy on ArabianLines at the minute No_Angel, she is called Dazzling Dream, she is not beautiful, but workmanlike and a good price, bred for endurance.

Click on mares/fillies and scroll down to her.

Honestly?
well....

He looks a super chap, nicely put together, looks to have reasonably short cannons (it is my obsession and essential in an endurance horse.)
If I was being really picky (:p ) I would say he needed slightly larger hock joints, but he looks a nice sort.

If you can find out his breeding I will have a look at his pedigree for you.

I have never bought a horse locally. My Icelandic was from Wiltshire (via Iceland!) Dolly came from Sussex, near Battle and newbie girl is coming down from Scotland and is a bought unseen and untried. I really didn't mind the hassle of travelling if it was for the right horse.

Edited to add:
I would just double check what he is like in traffic, and check his temperament is fairly even.
