In my efforts to see my boy at least once a week to give him love, attention, and workouts that he deserves and needs, I went out to the farm on Saturday afternoon. The weather was wonderful! Sunny skies and about 70 degrees F.

Trainer/farm owner/friend/riding instructor (her name is Anne) said when I called her before coming out that the girl looking at Dutch wasn't a good match (yes he is still for sale), and Anne said she had ridden Dutch a bit and that he was a very good boy and she even took him on the road a little bit. So, feeling encouraged that Dutch was in a good frame of mind to work, I went out to the farm with the intentions of going for a hack down the road a peice.

I always work with Dutch in the round pen before I go anywhere or do anything else. He gets run around before and after grooming and before and after tacking up. He was pretty fine in the round pen, but he had more energy than usual. But he behaved. So I got on him in the round pen and we did a few turns to warm up. Then I got off and lead him out of the round pen and over to a place I could get on him again and we could go for a hack. Well the boy pranced and would hardly stay still for me to climb on his back from the side of Anne's old truck. I should have seen this as my first warning.

Dutch argued with me a little bit when we we're leaving the farm to go down the road. That should have been my second warning. He was so full of himself and head high and ears forward and sometimes didn't want to go forward. This was his first time down this road, there were other houses and horses, but still, my boy is almost 27 years old and said to be a master of the trail! So we got to the end of the road, and turned around, and all Dutch wanted to do was PRANCE back to the farm. It would have looked very pretty in a dressage ring, his collected trot and arched neck, such raw power collected and held in, but on the trail? Ek. I remained calm and did some nose-to-my-boot stops to try to get him to calm down and WALK back to the farm. What a pain!

We got back to the farm and he got a good 30 minute workout in the round pen again (me not on him), and he cantered most of the time. What a high strung boy!

Well, he did just go back on his pellet feed 3 days before this ride. So I guess that is why he has more energy than usual. But still, Anne said he was a very good boy for her! Argh, must be because she's a much better rider than I.

And he's still for sale. I just don't do well with very very forward moving horses, and Dutch is just that. I can't believe he is almost 27. He acts like a 2 year old!

Sigh. Thanks for listening to my rant :-)

He sounds like quite a handful, amazing how much energy they have despite their veteran status.Have you had many people coming to look at him with a view to buy ?

A few people here and there, nothing serious though. My trainer says to be patient, Dutch's new owner will come in due time, and meanwhile maybe there is something I can learn from Dutch. Trainer is now settled at her new farm. Most everything is set up again (round pens, arena, etc) and her new house will be arriving in another week or so. So she's back into the swing of things and will have the time again to give lessons and help me work with my boy.

Dutch really does know that I am his mummy. Even my husband says it, he loves me very much.

You only get out of a relationship what you put into it... so I'm gonna try to put more into it.
