Hi

I would like your advice please. There is a possibility that I may be able to ride someone's cob. He is a middleweight & can carry up to 14 stone. His owner has told me that if I rode him it would be a very light ride for me.
I am 5 foot 2 & weigh 9 stone. Am I too small to ride this cob?

I don't think you'd be too light - there was a lady on my old yard who was probably about the same height / weight as you - (lucky people that you are:p :D ) and she rode a 17hh warmblood x (with something chunky by the look of him). She didn't struggle!

your weight should make no difference to the horse. providing you can keep your legs on and are a capable rider (i'm sure you are) then there is no reason why there should be a problem

being too light isn't really a problem. Being too short, or too weak can be. As long as you are comfortable, can get a stable leg position and give reasonable aids no reason at all you can't ride him. aj xx

Height can be a problem, I'm 5"3 and find that I can't get my legs past the saddle flaps on tall horses, and even on smaller horses I can't use my legs very effectivly (although I do have a knee injury). I find I'm more comfortable on ponies with my weight and height, but if you feel comfortable on the cob there's no reason why you shouldn't ride him!

Hi :)

Thanks everyone for your friendly advice & views. I will let you know how I get on, if his owner lets me have a go on him :-)

Not quite true;) Tis the reason I'm not still riding 13hh show ponies - I'm too heavy for them:(

But being 'too light' is just stupid. Being too small, yes, that can be a problem with big, stong, bulshy horses unless you're very good at gaining respect, but at at 5'2 you're not exactly tiny for a cob (who's what, 15hh ish?). A 18hh hunter might not notice you're there but a small horse will.
