UPDATE FROM BRUNIE.

The lady offering me a loan of her "old Mare" 15 have come back to me, with lots of different information. She has 2 youngsters and an endurance and was going to put her TB Mare into retirement. She explains about what she does and doesn't do and also about living in and out, about shoes, feed etc. That she was ridden last year by an 15 year old and won4 trophies at a local show. I am a little wary but worth a look.. Has she just not got the time/money to exercise her, or ? winter coming costs then come to me. She has said that if I find my own suitable horse then her mare can just go back to her, I have nothing to pay for her just my yard cost etc, etc.

worth a look, loaning is a good introduction into owning.
I have had 2 old mares on loan for my daughter....the best I've ever had..far better than the young ones I baught !!
Down side is oldies need more attention and more likely to have vet bills...but then you can give her back!

PS..I'm newish to this site too...but had horses for years...(I'm 40 with 13 yr old daughter )

People loan horses for all sorts of reasons, particularly when nearing retirement and they have other, younger horses or ponies to concentrate on. Loaning is a responsible way to deal with the care and control of a horse you either don't have time to work or the finances to keep due to other demands. Keep your eyes peeled. If she were trying to sell you the horse I'd be more wary but under the circs, go and see, nothing to lose at this point :D .

Lots of people loan perfectly good horses especially when winter is round the corner, with this mare being a TB she may cost more in feed than a good doer, although I had one that was competion fit at 17 yrs old, kept his condition with no hard feed and was as sound as a pound.
If you like the sound of her, go take a look with RI or/and YO, but remember that generally speaking TB's are temperment wise in a class of their own, but there are exceptions and she may be one.

I think it's definitely worth your while to look at the mare...loaning is a great option. Can't hurt to check her out anyway. :)
