I am starting english now, after riding western for 4 years and was wondering if I should get either jods or breeches? I prefer the look of breeches but wanted to know which one was preferred, or better?

Thanks!:)

normally jods r worn by kids age 12 and under. i dont like how they feel tight on the knees personally and breeches are for field boots or half chaps relly. If you are planning on getting field boots or half chaps get breeches, if just paddok boots and nothing else, jods are normally worn but i would wear breeches anyways, as they r my preference:) hope this helped :D good luck with riding the right pair

I think you should try and see which you prefer, I prefer jodhpurs but some people think Jods can be tighter round the knee (which I prefer because it saves putting any strapping on my knee! )

Go to a shop and try them on. I like Gorringe ones best.

personally i dont find any difference between jods and breeches, apart from soem jods have a cuff on the bottom that can be uncomfortable. I always wear long boots aswell (cant stand jod boots) and dont notice much of a difference:)

Same here, short boots just dont feel right  Also I find long boots easyer to clean than half chaps, and they seem to give my shinn better protection (since I have two metal plated running inside my left shin extra protection is good).

I've only ever had jods - breeches are probably a good idea - but somehow never seen any in my price range in my local tack shop! I am vertically challenged so they'd probably be better than jods for me - as jods are quite long. I guess its just a case of finding what fits best! Try a few on...

Admittedly I don't go to a lot of shows, but I've never seen anyone here (CA, USA) wearing jods. For shows, people wear breeches, for lessons and schooling (unless maybe if you're at a very posh barn with a dress code) schooling tights or even jeans are typical wear, though some folks do wear breeches.

you can not even tell the difference between jods or breeches unless you have no foot where on any way....

I usually wear jods, as I find breeches too long usually, as I'm vertically challenged (as Trewsers put it!!). It's a lot easier, athough I do have trouble getting them on sometimes with my knee support.

Ah, you see, I wear breeches cos I find jods too long:cool: I wear breeches, joddy boots and gaiters. Can't get long boots to fit (not off the peg anyway and can't afford custom made ones).

I actually don't wear either when I ride -- I wear jeans! :D
Though, a few years back when I was novice, I rode in jods (well, riding tights actually...or something)

But, isn't the difference between breeches and jods is that breeches are a bit like shorts, and jods are like...pants? I'm a bit confused  :o

jodhs are normally ankle length, often with a cuff; breeches come half way between knee and ankle, and normally have a velcro fastening. I used to wear either... Some jodhs can be uncomfortable around your ankles if they've got cuffs. I tended to go for breeches for best, as they seemed to 'sit' better, and were more comfortable under long boots. I always wore mid calf length socks, and pulled them over the breeches, which helped them not to slide up when I put my boots on..

Jodhs all the way, I wear with either jodhpur boots and half chaps or long boots, can't stand breeches - way to uncomfortable. I think it really depends on what you are used to though!

With tall boots, or paddock boots and half-chaps you can't tell the difference!

I have jods, and breeches, and don't prefer either, just wear what I can find.

I wear both but prefer jods - my fav pair in the world are my Dublin pull on jods - no zips! I find breeches baggy around my tummy sometimes and a bit strange. I always cut the bottom off my jods or wear kids ones because i'm also vertically challenged!
