I ran across this video of the current Mundial Champion....Tormento de la Virginia. I was there to see him claim his second World title in November.
This video is kinda long, but it also shows some of his offspring and there quick gait already being displayed. Notice the natural j tails of the foals shown on the line. Beautiful.

Sorry if this is a silly question - but can anyone tell me a bit more about the pace that they demonstrate in this video? What is it called? How is it trained? I guess it's unique to particular breeds, like the pace? And how does the competition work?

That is called the Classic Fino gait. It is a even 4 beat where each foot gets picked up individually at even timing. It is a natural gait (foot fall), but collection and perfection of it is trained. Each Paso executes it slightly differently. Maybe higher or lower action, or speed of execution, and timing of foot fall.
They can travel in other gaits such as the pace and trocha, trot, canter, etc. But they are bred to execute the Paso Fino gait.

I would love to try one, but I still want to see tracking up, I am used to our gaited Icelandics, you want flow and movement and speed.
Is there a faster gait they use?
I have to say I didn;t watch the whole video.

Why disturbing? It's natural?:D
Thanks for the Icey vids....they are cool. Not exactly the same timing of footfall...but close.

To the untrained eye it looks as if it should be as uncomfy as sitting trot on a pony with a rocket up it's bottom, I imagine the riders vibrating out of the saddle but they sit so still! It's either much smoother than it looks or those are some amazing riders. Actually, it's probably both! :D
Edited to say I see what you mean about the J-Tails, that's quite distinctive.
Edited again because I just saw the foals doing the same gait just at the end of a lead line! Disco foals! :D

From classical music training YEARS ago I remember 'largo' is supposed to mean 'slow and stately'???
Stately, yes, but I wouldn't call 25mph slow! :-)
