After a year of tall boots, (Effingtons), I have come to the conclusion that even though I like how they look, they would be more practical for showing. If I got half chaps, could I wear my jodpurs with them? I know jeans are normally worn with chaps, but I reallly like my jodpurs.

Most of the people I see in half chaps have them over jodhpurs, I don't actually know anyone who rides in jeans more than once before deciding jods are comfier.

I wear long boots in winter, for warmth, and half chaps in summer 'cos they're cooler. And jods all the time 'cos they're comfy.

My tall boots are comfortable, but I they get really hot during the summer and the barn where I ride is muddy during the winter so I have to constantly clean them. I probably wouldn't have to spend as much time cleaning with half chaps. For right now, I am going to stick with my boots because they are really comfortable and look great. You are all so right- jodpurs are really comfy.

Ok, now I'm just going to be lazy and just copy and paste one of my posts from the 'Apparel' thread in the 'Starting Out' forum to answer your question:-

Please don't call them 'tights', you'll end up putting me right off my pair of Jods!

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned (I've read through the posts quickly and didn't see it anyway), but the main differenece between Jods and breeches is the length (and not just the velcro fastening on the bottom of the leg! )
Jodpurs are designed to go with 'short' boots, whilst Breeches are designed to go with 'long' boots, so the length of the Jodphur is greater thyan that of the Breech. It doesn't matter if you wear Jods and long boots (well I do anyway ), but having a bit of leg exposed with the combination of short boots and breeches might not be so clever!

I know I'm lazy, but hey! Why make it difficult! :D

I recently invested in a pair of half chaps after a couple of years of riding in synthetic boots (and being "yelled" at regularly for not keeping my heels down!!). The difference in the Chaps are incredible - it is so much easier to feel everything and therefore much easier to keep your leg in the correct postion...and keep the heels down. Even my instructor has commented on my improved position. One of these days or years I think I will invest in the real thing - those lovely long leather boots, but for now my vote is with the Chaps.:D

I'd go with the chaps!

Chaps are comfy and smart, and I've only ever seen them worn with jodphurs, not jeans! Maybe its an American/British thing!

I have a pair of Gaiters, which are leather half chaps with a zip up the back. They look exactly like leather long boots, but they are much cheap er and more practical.

I wear chaps and I prefer them to rubber boots:)

I cannot wear jods with either long boots or short boots plus half chaps. The reason for this is that they have turn-ups at the bottom which hurt when enclosed by half-chaps or long boots. They also put much much more material between me and my horse and I don't like that either!!

I always turn that down:)

I always turn that down too - but I still find the bulk from the stitiching etc. uncomfortable.

Tip:

If you buy half chaps, make sure they are not too long. If they are up to your knees, you will split them at the top in no time!

I thought I wroe breeches.. But apparently not, now that I've read this thread. Jodpurs, eh? What an odd name. :p They're super comfy though. I swear by my new half chaps too! I tried them on; so comfy!! Now I just have to get real paddock boots.. I opted for the bulky mountain boots from PAyless because they were cheaper in the beginning, and plus I was working at the stbales I took lessons at too.. Now I must go invest in new boots so I can use the investment I made in those darned half chaprs. :D :D ;)

I always have my half-chaps handy in my truck. Although I prefer tall boots for any riding, sometimes I just don't have my breeches handy. It's nice to be able to just toss my half-chaps on over whatever I am wearing -- flannel nightie pants, jeans, breeches, etc. ;)

:D Love my half chaps, never ride without them, i cannot get long boots to fit me, my legs are way to short, consequently i have to have juniors chaps as well. I always ride in joddys, find jeans far too uncomfortable and restrictive.

They are called jodphurs, because they were worn over there, back last century while playing polo, and were brought back by the British.
Jodphur is a town/city in India, (or so I was told

I've actually never seen anyone ride in half chaps and jeans. Here we usually wear them over our joddies :) Then again, I wear joddies under my long boots for shows too :) I LOVE my half chaps, but just one tiny bit of advice - don't get too dependent on them - there was a thread here on NR (I looked for it but can't find it) where the rider wore half chaps for ages, and then at a show she wore jodhpur boots with jodhpurs and no chaps (obviously) and she said her legs were sliding everywhere. I haven't had this problem, but feel it must be worth mentioning. Don't rely on your half chaps to 'grip' the horse.

Hee hee I'm getting half-chaps for Christmas!! I can't wait...the long boots I have now are rubber...so they're really COLD in the winter......I've been advised by a few people that chaps keep you warm in cold weather..but can also be cool in the summer! Awesome..and they look so comfy too!:D:D

about the jodphur thing,. Jodphurs were originally used with short boots for childres use only as they came down to the ankle, breeches were for adults to be worn with long boots because they only came down to just below the knee. Two completly different trousers. Breeches have since got longer but you can tell the difference, jods go all the way down and are plain at the leg cuffs, Breeches usually stop slightly short of the ankle and have velcro cuff on leg.
