put him to my stallion! He is 12.2hh , coloured and had fantastic temperment and jump, he will be graded in the spring but at the moment his stud fee is only £250 and we're in cornwall!!

It depends really on what you want the foal for? What kind of pony are you looking to breed? What will you be using it for?
Once we know that, then the breeding people on here will be able to give you a better idea of a suitable stallion.

Is the mare registered or proven in harness or under saddle?
What do you want the foal for?
I know of a very handy Highland X Shetland, she grew to about 13.hh and turned into a very smart little R&D pony.
BUT unless you have the skill to produce and finiish the foal I'd be wary, there are far too many Shetland types in rescue homes as it is.

Agree with others, but a Welsh may be nice!! Lke the highland idea, or maybe a Dales/Fell pony??
Just random ideas, don't know about shetlands conformation faults, you want something that compliments that and makes it better

I personally would breed her to another Shetland - crossing horses can sometimes be a bit of a genetic lottery.
Also, it would be unfair to breed her to anything that is more than a couple of hands taller than she is or she might experience problems foaling.
Be very sure of the type you want to breed, what it could be used for and if you are going to keep it or not.
Also is your mare REALLY good enough to breed from? You have to be very objective here and very honest with yourself. Is she fully registered and papered?

There are far too many unregistered ponies about of the Shetland variety.

We are going to the Sales next week (shetland pony sales in Lerwick) and the bidding, no word of a lie, will start for some registered colts at 50p!
So, if you are thinking of breeding just for breeding's sake, please think twice about it because there are alot of unwanted ponies out there anyway.
