Hi there,
You can hopefully see my pics of both my ponios (if not bear with me haven;t used photobucket in a while and never remember how to use it from one time to the next!!)
I have a dun filly highland x cob,my question about her is am I right in thinking she is yellow dun?? and does she still count as a true dun despite the white markings on her legs and face??

My other pony (the grey) is I believe a new forest, says new forest x on her passport and came from that part of the country.Saddlefitter recently said to me however that she is definately welsh pony, older pit pony type apparantly.I can't see any welsh myself but what do you all think??
I would also like to confirm what colour you all think she is.I think dapple grey (has quite a lot of dapple markings on chest),or does she just class as grey??She goes a very dark grey in the winter (she goes same colour as the dark colour on her legs, all over, except her belly which stays slightly lighter).Anyway without further ado, here they are.Hope you like:)

Has the grey always had the red mixed in with the grey? If so then she looks like a type of roan. As for what breed, i cant help you.

The first one is a true dun; she's bay dun. She has a proper dun eel stripe, slightly darker head and legs, and frosting in her mane; the white markings on her legs have no bearing on it at all. She is a dun :)

The second is grey. I can't see anything particularly Welsh about her and I'm not sure what Saddlefitter meant by 'old type pit pony' really either! It's a myth that mines used Welsh ponies; the type of pony (or horse) used in the mines depended on the type of work done and the circumstances under which it was carried out; as such, ponies ranged from 10hh Shetlands right up to 17hh draft horses! The average was about 14hh and while some collieries bred their own horses others just bought what was available and suitable. Lots were ordinary stocky hairy cob type ponies.

At the moment she's making the transition from being iron grey to dapple grey. She'll get gradually lighter and lighter every year now, going through a more obvious dappled phase, until she eventually ends up white.

Was hoping you would reply Chev!!

Am very pleased she is true dun,was hoping she was despite white markings.Am surprised at her being bay dun though always associate bay with a more brown body colour, shows how much I know!!

Agree about the welsh pony thing, but she was so adamant about her being welsh!! So do you think she is new forest?? I think it more likely than welsh, but I don't know enough about newfies to know. How quickly will she turn white??,not for a while I hope is hard enough to keep clean as it is!!

Could have New Forest in - has the slightly more 'horsy' head of the Forester (as opposed to being ponylike).

Could just be Heinz 57 pone of no particular cross or breeding, just a nice little grey 'un.

Your dun is lovely:D
