Mare and foal question

When a foal is weaned how long should you keep them separated before you can let them back together?

Until the mare is totally dried up. Ours were apart for over a month, and when put back together the filly still tried to nurse! It was uncomfortable for the mare so there was a ten minute spinning match and finally mare got sick of dodging her and gave her a cowkick.
