 Please someone help me. My boy developed a swollen fetlock about 10 days ago ....it was hard and hot but only a small amount of lameness.... if any. I have been resting him and hosing with cold water .it is now down to a small soft lump still with a little heat. I got told he may have sprained it, another person said wingalls which i don't think it is as he is only on light work. and the farrier came today and said he thought it was mud fever...there is some flakey white dry skin but hardly any.
So i have washed his feet and put a iodine rinse on. Can mud fever cause a swelling like this?
I have also put him on glucosamine sulfate to help his joints he is around 18- 20 years old. The confusing bit of this is that he shows no pain in that area and doesn't mind me prodding and squeezing it. I just hope i am doing the right sort of treatment .... any other tricks i could try??

Windgalls are normally just a small lump starts off full of liquid but can then go hard and no longer affects horse(depending on how bad it is and where exactly it is) mud fever would be a bit like a rash causing cracks and flakey skin in around the heels and can tavel up the leg depending on how much "mud" the pony is in, Sounds like a wind gall to me, In a couple of days the heat should go out of it when its fuly formed and you can go back to normal.

If it was mud fever id be extremly suprised that he will let you poke and prod, and as above..you should see the cracks etc

Mud fever can cause horrific infections if not noticed and the cracks don't have to be that big. It can cause very hot swollen legs. Windgalls are a result of concusion. Even if ** horse is in light work they can still develop as the ground was hard over the summer. Is it only one fetlock? If it is i doubt it is windgalls as they tend to come up on both hind legs. Sounds to me a bit like an infection of some sort, but if its going down i wouldn't worry too much now

Mud rash

Is this what is happening?

Mud rash
Often appears on the backs of horse’s pasterns and fetlocks. This will start off as matted hair with dry crusts, and progress to swollen moist weeping lesions. If the crusts are removed at this stage there is often a moist pink sore skin surface and some pus underneath. In its extreme form, this will cause considerable leg swelling, and consequently the horse can be very lame.

Hi,

Not wanting to alarm you, but it sounds like this might be a tendon injury. Have a look at this thread, it also includes a link to my earlier thread.

I've been going through this for 2 and a bit months now - I didn't realise how serious it could be, and wish I'd dealt with it immediately instead of assuming it would go away, I left it 3 days before the vet came out:rolleyes:

The swelling and lump sound similar to my horse's injury - he's never gone lame on it, and doesn't mind me poking and prodding it either.

I'd get your vet out, to be on the safe side.:)
