Whats the best way to keep a long mane tidy and tangle/mud free in winter?
Im thinking of plaiting it, and maybe getting a lyra hood, he will have a full neck rug on later on in winter, hes just started wearing his masta checktech standard neck rug.

I put my horses mane in a running plait. It normally lasts, til it needs tidying up, about once a month. Each time I take it out, to replait, I cover it in Wahl spray. Its great stuff, and makes the mane really easy to brush, without pulling too much out.

Even with a lycra hood they are liable to want to scratch, just make sure you comb it out evry couple of days n give em a good scratch. Otherwise you might end up with a patchy, Rubbed n split mane. That should do the trick:)

last year i plaited harry's mane. i sometimes do a running plait but i found that individual long plaits are just as good, once a week take the plait(s) out and coat the mane in mane and tail conditioner, brush with a soft body brush and allow to dry, then you can replait. by plaiting it the mud sits more ontop of the mane and you can slide it down the mane. i did that last year and my horse didn't have a full neck rug. Hope that works :)

Have lots of long manes here. I just clean it up, rub in a good amount of Cowboy Magic gel, brush in well. Lasts up to 2 weeks, will not dry the hair, mud brushes right out of the mane and best of all, no wind curls.
I live in an area of lot of rain and the soil is clay.

Echo lolahutt - we use Mane ' n Tail conditioner on manes as often as poss; the silicon keeps it tangle free and the mud doesn't stick easily. Plus their forelocks look really "bouffant"! lol

I hear baby oil is a good one, kinda greasy but keeps the mud dreadlocks at bay.

watch out with baby oil, some horses are allergic and they get really itchy from it

Another one for plaits, Bry will soon be plaited up all the time to stop those lucious locks getting filthy!!

don't platt too tight as will start to hurt after a while.
Get a fleecy hood for in the stable too :) as they are not as tight as lycra

agree about not plaiting too tight, the horse should have as much freedom with plaits as without and you don't want the mane to be too curly when you take it out

I left my horse's mane to get clarty last year! Just a slob I guess. It was lovely & clean after it rained, then it got mucky, then clean, then mucky...

I also just douse in mane and tail and plait up most of the time, though this year they might get a lycra hood each, last year I found even with full neck rugs they lost a bit (Bo's got caught in the clip that attached the neck cover and tore quite alot out).
