when ever you feel ready, i went into my first small show after riding for about 6 months, i could only just jump, and did a very slow small clear round!!
i would wait until you are cantering confidently, and can handle your horse when it's excited and in traffic.
if you are doing a jumping class then you should be jumping what ever the height is confidently!!
because horses always act slightly different at shows, so you should be well prepared!!!!
remember you can just go on horse for the experience, and maybe just pop over the practise jump!!

Most riding schools have little starter shows which are usually informal affirs. You can learn to turn out for various classes and what you are supposed to wear.

We are having one in a few weeks time. Nobody is expected to even own a pair of jodhs, but they will be expected to turn out their own horse for a best ridden and best presented horse class. Then do a VERY simple dressage test. The younger ones can even be lead if they want to.

So you can do a show when you feel it's right for you.

I wouldn't recommend entering a big show, start with small local events and work your way up to the Olympics!:D

I have been "seriously" riding for only 3 months now, however, since I started lessons already knowing walk, trot, canter just perfecting the position in them, I started jumping right away. In fact, I have my first jumping show in a week! I'm so nervous!!! But I should do well because I am on the sweetest pony-horse (lol, I'm not sure which one, she's between 14.2-14.3hh) and she is very experienced. I should do well! :)

I'm hoping to start showing this summer too. Planning on M&M and some dressage. Maybe jumping later on when I have got a bit more used to Dougal (he's a bit nippier than I'm used to).
