Well Peggy Sue finally had her foal at around 4 am this morning. Got some piccies below, I was expecting a Palomino, but got a real surprise.
The foal is a filly, just what I prayed for. I knew it would be either a buckskin or palomino. Either way I love the colour.

I don't know if the filly will stay black. Does anyone have any ideas as to what colour this little filly will mature to.
Dad is a Perlino and Mum is a Chestnut.
We have decided to call the foal Days of Velvet.
This is such a happy moment after losing Peggy Sue's last years foal in in January this year. Just had to share the news with you guys.

The foal has to inherit a cream gene cause daddys got two so one must be passed onto baby. Since its not a palomino (chestnut base) or buckskin (bay base) it must be smokey black (black base obviously). This means that the foal looks black but as the cream gene isnt expressed on a black base it is hidden and the foal with just look black. It may have a bleachy look to it when mature.

Thanks Jaimee
It will be interesting to see what happens when she loses her foal coat. Does anyone have pictures of a mature horse with a smokey black coat?
I should imagine the coat will fade in the Queensland sun, so I guess the bleached black coat would be expected. I don't know if a cotton summer rug would make a different to keep her colour when I am showing her.

She is indeed smokey black; black with one cream gene.
She has one E (black) gene from dad, and one cream (Cr).
She has one red gene (e) from mum.
So she is heterozygous black with cream. She'll probably end up a very dark diluted black colour although there's no guarantee; some smokey blacks look like very dark brown while others stay so black you never know they have cream til they throw a dilute foal themselves!
ambatt on here has a smokey black Icelandic called Nott; Nott is one of the lighter smokey blacks but I'm sure ambatt would show you pics of her :)
(Edit to add please don't post the same thread in more than one forum; mods can always move it if it's in the wrong place but posting several times wastes server space, does irritate some members and makes more work for the mods clearing up the duplicate threads :) )

Apologies for posting the same post on different threads, I won't do it again :o (slaps wrists) ouch!
Thanks for answering my post Chev, I was gobsmacked to see a black foal in my paddock when I was truely expecting a palomino or buckskin from my chestnut mare. Is Smokey Black the same as a Black Buckskin? I have sent Ambatt a PM asking if she has a picture of Nott, just to give some idea of a mature Smokey Black colour. My foal is so black, her coat is like black velvet. It is obviously not going stay like that. I'll have to check with AQHA as to what colour I would register her as.

No, smokey black is not the same as a buckskin. Buckskin in bay with one cream gene, sooty buckskins are buckskins with sooty (so they end up dark smutty gold).
I'm pretty certain she would be registered as smoky black, but you'd be as well to check with them. Definitely not as a buckskin of any type though; she has no bay gene. :)
Have a look at this site (http://www.doubledilute.com/smokyblack.htm) - some smoky black pics, information about dilutes and double dilutes, and also information about dilutes and the AQHA. :)

Oh my, Nott is gorgeous. I have seen horses that colour, but didn't know the colour was smokey black. Gee I'm learning something new here.
Thanks Ambatt for posting Nott's photo.
Chev, I have checked out the site you mentioned and I can certainly see some variations of Smokey Black. I am so looking forward to watching how this filly's colour will change. In a way I am glad she is this colour, my chestnut mare carries the smutty gene, she always develops dark patches of black hair when I feed her lucerne (alfalfa), so the chances of a palomino or buckskin may have developed smut. I don't have much choice in quality hay here in Queensland so have to feed alfalfa most of the time. We also have drought conditions at the moment so the paddock grass is not that good. Thanks for your help.
