I first saw a photo of a Knabstrupper in a horse book years ago and I've loved this breed ever since. Imagine my delight when I found online tonight that there are Knabstruppers in America now and that they have an association, the American Knabstrupper Association!

Imagine my disappointment when I next read that the parent, and official, Knabstrupper organization, the Danish Knabstrup Society, neither approves nor works with the US association.

Do any of you own or admire or know anything about Knabstruppers? I've learned that in recent years they've been bred with Appaloosas from America and have changed from the "old-fashioned" Knabstrupper type that I saw in that book long ago. But I've seen at least one of the older types in a recent photo online, and they're reputed to be good dressage warmbloods.

I would love to hear from anyone who knows about them!

I remember them. I think Pippi Langstrumpf's (Pippi Longstocking, the pirate's daughter) horse was a Knabstrupper, wasn't it?

I can understand that the original assoc doesn't want to endorse these Appy mixes :o ... would be like mixing Friesians with Arabs over here and calling them a new 'lighter' Friesian type.

At least some of the Appy mixes were done not in the USA but in Europe though - I remember reading about it years ago

Yes--in my opinion crossing Friesians with Arabs and calling them a lighter type of Friesian is only a bit better than crossing Friesians with Quarter Horses and calling them Quaresians (and I have seen such a website!)

(Hmmm . . . maybe I should try crossing an Icelandic with a Fjord and coming up with some catchy name for this new "breed"?) :D

There is another nice Knabstrupper site at

http://www.sartor.dk/
(Surely if I can get my guy to halt squarely I can figure out how to post a link!!!)

I really just wanted to know if anyone here has any personal experience of them.

I think Pippi Longstocking's horse was indeed a Knabstrupper! It's been ages since I saw that film ... :)

We have one at our yard, but that's about all I can tell you at the moment. I will ask her owner what she thinks of the breed if you like.

Thanks, lizzy.
What do you think of the mare at your yard?

The wonderful stud I took Angel to last year also had a Knabby ( pure bred) called Faust. He is the nicest chap and has some amazing babies, unfortunately they have all just moved to France but I will be taking a trip there in March to pick up a container for Angels next baby! http://www.goshka.co.uk/faust.htm

Faust has just moved to Ireland but his new address is on the Goshka website. I'm not sure whether to go for a tobiano or a spotty with Angel next year. Ringo and Faust are both such lovely boys its a hard choice.
