my cute and lovely little mare thinks the bunch of cows in the field on the way down to the beach are out to get her - the moofia
so i get off and walk her past as her little heart starts beating with fear, to protect her from those strange creatures.
last night i was feeling a bit impulsive so i got off and led Bonnie up to the fence and we spent 5 minutes asking puzzled moo faces how they were keeping etc etc.
hope no one was lurking in the hedge
It worked! on the way back she just eyed them up suspiciously, sighed and walked on.
am I mad?
yes i think i may be :o

the moofia
lol :D
Sounds like a success - they're not as scary as they look, then! Shannon thinks they are horses with horns, and has escaped and hidden herself camouflaged in the middle of a herd of black cows...

we always say hello to the cows. i find if i say 'hello cows!' quite loudly, one of them will moo at me, and then once they have mooed petal doesn't think they are tigers in disguise. she is happy with cows once she is sure they are really cows and not trying to trick her, but she does get suspicious of them if they are hiding behind a hedge and not out in the open where any honest cow ought to be.

I shall also have to try your method teabiscuit. Cows are a breeze but the shetland ponies are definitely mare-eating monsters! :p

Me and bailey often go and see the baby cows on our jaunts. As he was from a council estate:rolleyes: he didnt know what daffodils were never mind Cows!
I think the cows get rather confused as he is black and white like them and like to come and see what he is.There is one that will come right over and lick his face but he does like to snort at them so they run about!

My three year old gelding was afraid of cows earlier this summer. This was a problem because around here you encounter cows on just about any trail ride. We began by taking Luke to the fence of a cow pasture to watch. After several days of this, we actually put him in the cow pasture with the cows and watched him. At first he snorted and pranced around, but very quickly he realized they would run from him. So, he began walking behind them and sniffing them. After five minutes, he was totally at ease with the cows. Then, last week, we had an opportunity to herd cows with a local ranch. After 8 hours walking behind and among cows, Luke doesn't think twice about them!

Great idea to have a friendly chat with the cows. :) Glad it helped her relax about them.

were pony lives is a dairy farm -> quite a few cows :D last summer, there were incidents where angel bolted out of the fieldgate because the cows in the neighbouring field got a bit too close for comfort (bit like a neighbourly fence - dispute i guess!).
in the winter, the cows are all fed in this pen bang in the middle of the yard, so your horse may well find itself tied up at the fence of this pen, eye to eye with a cow. oddly, angel didn't care about that at all ... hmmm.
now she spent the whole summer in the field next to a cow field ... and doesn't care. in fact none of them do. one horse was even seen chasing a cow off the shared water trough (fence goes through middle of trough) :D

For some reason my chestnut mare is a cow magnet, the instant they clap eyes on her, they all rush up to the fence to have a look, which causes her to act like a right muffin - snorting and fly bucking - which in turn encourages them to act like bigger muffins and sets them off cantering and snorting.
One day I did manage to ride her up to a gate where a couple of young cows were watching her, she was puffing and blowing like a steam train, but I took my time, she relaxed a little and stepped forward for a sniff - then they blew a huge snorty gasp of air in her face - she nearly fell over backwards, and I nearly fell off laughing.
Strangely, the cows don't even look up, when I pass on my skewbald mare - isn't that odd?

I think we will take May to the common on Sunday to go past the cows as she seems to be getting braver.

There's a cow at our yard called Kylie, and she was a rescue as calf. She's scared of horses and fields, so she lives in the YO's garden with a goat for company.
The horshoe on the other hoof? Or summat like that:D
