One of the other horses in my field has the most terrible bad breath. She's only 4 years old and she's had it for weeks. I've brought the subject of dentists up in conversation but to no avail. Surely there must be damage being done to her teeth/gums.

Do you think maybe her owner has no sense of smell and I should say something? The last thing I want to do is interfere - what would you do?

I'd suggest that bad breath in a horse is an indicator of a potential problem. She may not be aware.

You should definitely tell the owner as bad breath is a sign of a dental problem. Food will be getting trapped in her mouth, and then bacteria builds up as it rots.

The horse will really need to see a qualified edt, see website of www.equinedentistry.org.uk for a list

I would say something for the horse's sake. It doesn't have to be nasty. Just tell her you have noticed that her horses breath smells bad and that could indicate a problem. I would be so grateful if someone pointed out something I had failed to notice:)

I would tell them in case the horse had something wrong, like bad teeth or a problem with his/her digestive system

Yeah, I'd definitly mention something because it could be an abcess, bacteria because of something trapped in the gums or between the teeth, a crack (from being hit by flying hooves), oh I could go on.

You could mention that you're concerned about her horse as bad breath is not normal with horses.

We eventually had to put a horse down because no one had noticed or maybe ignored the bad breath & by the time the horse came back to us, it was too late.

Better be safe than sorry.
