I have seen the saddle I MUST HAVE - the limited edition Barefoot Cheyenne in green :D (Frayne is a Brown/Bay Exmoor and green looks great on her.)

However, is it strictly necessary to have the expensive pad to go under it (more than £60) - or can I get a cheaper saddle pad (still designed for treeless saddles) - I have seen ones on Ebay for less than £40.

Opinions from Barefoot saddle users please :)

ps Any ideas on how to persuade non-horsey hubby to lend me the necessary cash, so I can get this limited edition saddle now, rather than have to wait several months and risk not getting one???

I'm pretty sure that you could use another treeless pad for the cheyenne :) I have heard of people who did not like the grandeur (sp) pad as it made their horses sweat alot.

I use a suber pad under my trekker with just a normal saddlecloth underneath:)

When I was trying the Barefoot Cheyenne, the Grandeur pad made my Fell pony sweat a great deal - and that was in summer when he had a short coat. What it would have been like in winter once he grows his thick shaggy coat - well, I'm sure it would have been worse.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't use a different pad though, providing it had plenty of support and shock absorption. I don't have a Cheyenne any more as it kept moving forwards up his shoulders - he has a very forward girth groove.

But the Cheyennes are lovely saddles at a great price. I always liked the look of the blue one in the limited editions!

As for the money side of things - I actually find that my mother is a better support with cash than my Other Half is when it comes to horses! She's a darling, and has just volunteered some cash towards my new Fhoenix.

Frayne sweats up just being exercised in hand at the moment (walk and a bit of trot), so I did wonder how the really thick saddle pads would affect her. I am going to get a Barefoot Cheyenne on trial, as she has no withers and I want to make sure it will stay in the right position before committing to buying one.

ps I have never had any trouble getting saddles to fit before
