View Full Version : Yikes - Twister bucking!

Went for a hack on Sunday and Twister was a bit naughty!

He bucked twice when we had a little canter, and then was jiggy joggy and REALLY striding out in walk!! Normally he has to be pushed on ALL the time!! He was walking so fast he was leaving our hacking buddy behind so I asked him to stand and wait and he put in a I-want-to-go-NOW! kind of buck

Still striding out (never experienced this before with Twister!!) and as we approached a busy road we have to cross, slowed down for hacking buddy to come past to take the lead - Twister did NOT like this, put his ears back and did not want to be passed!! So we stayed in front, stopped at the road (so at least we still had brakes!), stamped impatiently ..

To excuse him, he hasn't been exercised for about 3 weeks (as had another lami scare a few weeks ago) and we did hack out on a different route and there were some strange sights and sounds .. was quite good before the canter, just a bit more spooky than usual. But then afterwards, wondered what had happened to Twister the plod!

He's also gone a bit more nippy and bolshy on the ground .. hmm ... am going to have to work on the groundwork and teach him some RESPECT!

Erk - not sure what to think! Is this my supersafe plod that I bought??!! I did want him to be a bit more responsive and forward going, but not sure about this! As a saving grace, we did still seem to have brakes (even if he did stamp about when we stopped!) and his bucks didn't seem like GET OFF kind of bucks - more excited bucks (when going into canter) or frustrated buck when we stopped. Oh, and I'm pleased I sat them and didn't come off!

Just need to channel his energy in the right way :)

Oh norty Twister. Sounds like he is just feeling good in himself :D

If it is any consolation the horses at our yard have been a bit sharper than usual the last week or so, Loki has probably been the most unsettled since he got there, no idea why, he was a spooky monkey to hack out yesterday

I am sure the groundwork will help get him back in line :)

well done for sitting those bucks !

as you said, hes not been doing much work so perhaps hes just happy to be out? What about weather changes, did it get cooler?
when the tepmerature dropped here from high 30s to high 20s, the boys were so much sharper:eek: I think they slept better at night and just felt more comfortable. As new owners .I wonder if there is a pattern to seasonal behavior???

ground work sounds like a good idea;)

Btw, thanks for the tack shop advice , I got my saddles from Beavers. the lady there was so helpful, I got a bit carried away, 30kg in excess baggage !

Does sound like he is just feeling good in himself? Perhaps he is just getting fitter with more riding?

Good luck I am sure he didn't want to unseat you..just tell you he was a bit impatient.. :D And with three weeks off, he was just wanting to get on with it..?
