After my happy post about Cooper's back yesterday I recieved a call to my mobile at 0745hrs this morninghttp://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f270/Whatanejit/Smilies/call2.gif from a fellow livery to tell me that she arrived at the yard at 0730hrs to find Cooper loose in the yard and just polishing off one of the other horses dinner!
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f270/Whatanejit/Smilies/blowup.gif
YOs went on holiday for two weeks yesterday afternoon so I can't blame them and I'm not sure who the ******* idiot is who was supposed to check the gates.

I think I am going to have to pen a letter of complaint now and ask for some livery refund.

Will speak to HG this evening.

I think I will have to turn him around to the day shift this weekend as him and the other two ponies who are still on the nightshift are just getting neglected.

I was going to wait until the following weekend when the clocks go back but it isn't worth the risk.

OK, now I need to relieve my fury and go and eat some http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f270/Whatanejit/Smilies/chocolate.gif

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to rant!

FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE, DEE!!!! Somebody needs a finger pushed in their face about this

What's that place like? I should think, from similar experience at our old yard, that it's one person who doesn't give a sh*t for rules or anybody else's horse/pony but their own. The girl in question at my old yard had two ex racehorses she was too scared to ride but spent hours each day manicuring them and their stables. She was reckless about gates and other people's horses the COW! One of hers did it's complete NUT if left out alone and even if you told her that her horse was psyching up to jump the gate she would be dismissive. The horse would have been ok, it was anybody in its way that would have been trampled underfoot! What did she care   YO had so many 'words' with that girl about her attitude and horses manners, I'm surprised she was still there when we left

Was the food Cooper ate ok for him; I'd hate big boy to get colicky on top of everything else http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v296/lynda788/SMILIES/cranky.gif

you right click on the smillie and go to properties (like when you do it with a pic) copy the address and press http://www.newrider.com/forum/images/editor/insertimage.gif and paste smillie address i think. haven't tried it though

Had a word with HG tonight and YOs daughter.

Turns out female YO's son is staying on the yard while they are on hols for security but he knows nothing about horses. So obviously doesn't check the gates at night. I guess I will be doing that for the rest of Cooper's life then!

I said I was fuming especially as it just wasn't a one off and this was the third incident in less than two weeks.

But of course these two girls were not at fault! They were very sympathetic. HG asked us not leave as they really love Cooper and that going DIY might help etc etc.

Blah blah blah.

Anyway, she gave us a huge sack of carrots as a sorry for him.

The tale continues - until the next episode......................

Thanks for all your sympathetic grunts by the way....:o

Maybe you should think about moving yard. I know it's difficult to uproot, but the health and safety of the equines must be paramount. If the YO is so careless as to abandon the horses to an inexperienced person, you have to ask yourself whether you can trust them on anything?

I have had very severe words with my yard about infringements which are far less serious than yours, and will no doubt do so again in the future, but basically I trust them, and if I had experienced your events, I really think I would have been off - to leave horses like that, even if it's only for a weekend, to me says they are unprofessional, selfish, ignorant, in short, they don't care, they are not to be trusted - and I would not give over my boy to anybody who could not be trusted.

Only my opinion, of course, and maybe you find other things work well for you there, and that's a balancing item (but I wouldn't).

I'll say it again -- I know you have your reasons for not wanting to move -- but you know, some yards, you can completely trust the YO's to know EXACTLY what to do, in every inconceivably horrible situation. I've been lucky -- I can't imagine being in a situation when I can't turn to the YO and say "now what?" and trust them to have the right answer. Whatever your reasons for staying at your yard -- isn't that a tempting thought?

We have decided that DIY is our last ditched attempt to stay there.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f270/Whatanejit/Smilies/rant.gif
There have been a few injuries in the field and HG has been great at the first aid with YO being very happy for her to use his first aid stuff on the horse - that would be my only worry that I would'n't have the supplies to treat an injury if he was badly hurt.

A DIYer was on Safari for 3 weeks and went part livery while she was away HG noticed her horse was lame and they made the decision to get the vet out for her and didn't just leave her.

The horse had a foot abscess with a high temp and a high white cell count - really wasnt very well http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f270/Whatanejit/Smilies/ill.gif- so that was a good decision.

I am not sticking up for them here. http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f270/Whatanejit/Smilies/1z2m2y1.gif

I do believe he genuinely wouldn't harm the animals and he definately prefers them to people - in an old fashioned farmer sort of way - but he is lacking in attention to detail obviously.

I found out from my chat tonight that with Coops and the two ponies being the only part livery horses on the night shift that in the mornings he opens the gate and lets the three of them just walk out. The ponies are in the barn right by the gate and they have learned to walk into it and 90% of the time walk into the right stable and start eating their breakfast.

Cooper, as Skib and LD know, has a little bit further to go to his box but YO pushes him around to the stable - no headcollar, no rope around his neck. http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f270/Whatanejit/Smilies/undertheweather.gif

Aparently, last Sunday morning when the door was left open - he had gone into the barn to lock the door after the two ponies, came out, saw Cooper walk into his own stable - talk about DIY - he started to feed some of the other horses and then just forgot to close Cooper's door. http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f270/Whatanejit/Smilies/smiliehairpull.gif

Being a young horse I want him handled properly and with having been a little bolshy on arrival in March, then all the handling help from RI Coops is a well mannered, easy to handle gentleman both in the stable, in the field and at the field gate.

I had suspicions that he was doing this with Cooper as I have watched him on many occasions with the ponies and on the few occasions I have go there at the weekend and Cooper was already in his box his headcollar was not outside.http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f270/Whatanejit/Smilies/smiliesnono.gif

I had a word with another part livery two nights ago. She has had her horse around 3 other liveries in the area including one that cost £147 per week!! http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f270/Whatanejit/Smilies/confused3.gif
Although she agrees things are not perfect she said that she has had more problems in other yards around the area with the expensive one being the worst and that as long as you stay on your guard, http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f270/Whatanejit/Smilies/eyescan.gifkeep reporting the problems that it will be ok.

In fact she has persuaded two other liveries from the expensive one to move to ours.

The difference is that they are all in a huge barn mixed with DIYers and the DIYers really do look out for everyones horse.

Cooper is in what we call Cooper's Corner - a little area of 3 boxes. We love it because it is out of the way, really quiet spot in such a big yard but with him being the only one in during the day in that area he is being neglected.

Bringing him back to the day shift on Sunday will help and then I start DIY from the following week.

Oops - I did go one a bit didn't I?http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f270/Whatanejit/Smilies/1z32q9x.gif

Good one with the smilies Jenrenhttp://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f270/Whatanejit/Smilies/bravo.gif

For those of you who have suggested moving. Thanks for your time to write. It has been on our mind since the second day we arrived on the yard and we havn't ruled it out. We don't, however, want to make a hasty decision. Lots of people have left our yard in a huff and then come back a few years later to stay.

I dunno..........

I s'pose it's a bit too far to come out to our yard, Dee? A few of the liveries do travel cos it's such a reliable set-up.

I guess using the motorway on a winter's evening wouldn't be that great, tho'.

But from 3 mins to 30mins on a good day is not something I'll run at just yet.

There are quite a few within 15mins - around where Emma Gardner keeps her horse that have amazing hacking.

Its really difficult when you feel this way and of course everyone who is not directly involved will say "just move"- but its a bit like a dysfunctional relationship after a while isnt it? Lots of things you are not happy with but just enough right to keep you there, plus familiarity etc. I was to some degree in this position myself a while back and made the really tough decision to move away from all my horsey mates at the HHC but I havent regretted my decision at all, I just miss my friends.
You could always move to our yard (think its the one you mentioned EG is at, sorry I dont know surnames) there will be gelding spaces soon! Or is our end of Surrey too far for you? DIY is very reasonable.

I see your point Hackedoff. I think it is just that there are pros and cons to most yards and I have heard of other awful tales.
If I was on my own I would have been gone by now but with OH there it helps to have more 'protection' from the bullying.

I only found out yesterday that they have been feeding him Competition Mix too - even though I asked for a cool mix. They wanted to pick him up a bit because he was slow to walk up the field with!

I was wondering why every time I asked HG what he was on in preparation for DIY that she kept avoiding answering and saying that YO does the feeds so ask her.

HG lost a few brownie points for that, I'm afraid - and she knows it.

Turns out the poor boy has just been anaemic.

The competition mix was the last straw for convincing us that we are doing the right thing re DIY.

Certainly your yard would be fine for us to travel to but we will see how the next month or two pan out.

I'm sorry, but you're WAY more understanding than me. If the HG has been left in charge then it IS her fault. I'm honestly not going down the "someone has to be to blame for everything" road, but this is blatant stupidity. If the YO's son doesn't know what he's doing around horses (and has that little common sense) then he shouldn't be doing anything with them unsupervised where he can put either himself or the horses at risk . As long as it doesn't happen again....

Now I've got that off my chest (:o), fingers crossed you can get things organised to be safer. Fingers crossed DIY works out better for you :)

I have also been an offender of not leading the previous yard's horses in and out each night. I just used to open one stable door at a time and then let that horse walk out of the field. They then would just walk straight into their stable and munch on tea. This was a good option at the time . But I am suffering for it now. Captain is forgetting he is still attached to a headcollar and lead rope and running off with me in tow. I am expecting him to have manners and he is expecting to be in his usual routine of running off the minute he touches the grass. Or running into his stable for his tea without head collar and leadrope attached. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y40/novicenic/asmiliey/headsmack.gif

So now I am trying to teach him manners. I am also trying desperately to assert myself as herd leader as he is on individual turnout. But somehow I am not getting him to do what I want. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y40/novicenic/asmiliey/hailwoman.jpg

I would definately want my horse handled individually. I mean it isnt as though you are paying your YO peanuts to look after your horse. So the least they can do is lead your horse in and out properly. It is all about manners. If you get respect from the ground then it leads to building of respect whilst you are riding. Captain doesnt respect me. He isnt going to kill me he just walks all over me with his huge http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y40/novicenic/asmiliey/kissmybutt.gif knocking me out of the way.

So I am in training. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y40/novicenic/asmiliey/situps.gif

Jenren - What do you mean?? I too have wondered if the facilities are maybe the cause of Coopers huge worm count??

Whatanejit
22nd Oct 2006, 07:28 PM
Yes it could be poor land management regarding Cooper's worming NN but I think Jenren is hinting that they might be picking on us purposely to get rid of us.

Both could be true but I am not the only one with stories like these. I am just the only one from our yard who posts here.
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f270/Whatanejit/Smilies/good_vs_evil.gif
They treat everyone as a low life. OH and my mistake was to say we are confident novice riders, first horse, would be glad of their help.

They thought, ok he is our horse we will tell them what to do.... END OF.

We are not the only ones - fellow liveries say put your head down, be firm but civil, go DIY and they have to leave you alone.

So that is what we are doing.

Aparently they are going to Egvalan Duo the whole yard as they see that he can not be in isolation.

Hi, it sounds like you have made the right move by going DIY so you can monitor his feed, his wormer, his turnout routine etc. They sound awfully sloppy. The thing is (from experience) that now you have a good few complaints lodged in your head, despite how fine it is in the next few months, the next time something happens showing their lack of care, you will just blow and want to get out asap.

Now that you are a little calmer, maybe now would be a good time to start looking elsewhere, with a cool head on you. Then you can find the right place and not just move because you 'have to get out'.

I don't think that you can be entirely happy with the situation there with all these incidents. You may be out of livery, but there are other horses that still are and if they make a mistake with them, all the horses there could be in danger (oh god, the eternal 'what if' scenarios that run through a horsey mum/dad's head)

Whatanejit
23rd Oct 2006, 04:59 AM
Too true Platy 70.

Sloppy is the word for it and yes it would be nice to casual look at different yards over the next few months rather than in a panic of fustration and anger.http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f270/Whatanejit/Smilies/Angry/pullhair-1.gif

I think I might do a post on that and ask for pms.
