My daughter Jess has had Freddy for 2 weeks now and is ready to start working on him.

We are keen to get him working in an outline but would like advice on how to train him to do this properly. From reading previous threads on here I know that there are definate ways NOT to do it but would be grateful for any help on the right way please.

Have gone through all the books we have but none of them cover this.

Help please! :D

If by working in an outline, you mean like a frame, well that will be the last thing to aim for.

You have to achieve balance, impulsion/forwardness, flexion, him listening, and pushing up through his hind into the bridle.

Balance as in he's developed the muscles to hold himself at all gaits without leaning on the rider. Impulsion as in he's tracking up, pushing from behind, and not on the forehand. Him active/listening as in he's going around the ring responsive to your aids not flying around with his nose in the air avoiding the bit and your legs. Flexion is him bending freely at the poll. I'd suggest maybe getting your daughter a trainer to explain these things further. If you've never gotten a horse in an outline and don't know what to look for, a trainer may be your best bet.

(and anyone correct anytihng I said if I was incorrect)

I think you deff need a instructor to help, you may feel a change when every thing comes together, but an instructor can tell you when and why, it's a great feeling! Kind of like he all goes all light...

I agree, much better to get a trainer on the ground so that they can see exactly what's going on and give you guidance there and then.

Working in an outline needs to happen slowly over weeks and months because they need to build up their muscles correctly. In addition to the schooling work, working long and low can help as can carrot stretches.

Have taken your advice and Jess has done some work with her RI. May take a little while she says as he is chubby under his neck!!!! Sounds familiar:eek:

Jess kept trying and as soon as he moved his head she released and really praised him up - we'll keep persevering!!!:)
