Being fairly new to riding and never actually owned a horse I'm picking up bits and pieces as I go along - I've heard cripping mentioned a couple of times and just wondered if someone could tell me what it is?

Could that be cribbing? A behaviour where a horse takes hold of something in its teeth and makes a rather strange noise?

Yeah that will be the one sorry should have checked the spelling - you mean when they get anything in their mouth - like food, bits etc

Cribbing: Horses take hold of something with their two front teeth (top) and they take a big huge gulp of air making a 'UGH' noice that is rather annoying. They usually grab a hold of stall walls, sometimes water or feed buckets. anything in place as they tend to pull backwards. so no, not food bits or anything, usually stall walls.

However i do know a horse that can crib off a tied leadrope. he will take hold of the loop of the knot and crib off it.

Cribbing, gives the horse a 'high' very addicting and hard habbit to break. usually comes from being stalled to much or just being board of being stalled. with more turnout and grazing to keep the horse occupied you usually dont get these vices like cribbing.

It's a sign of stress, and I think I read somewhere that it makes horses with ulcers feel better.

There have been studies that habitual cribbers improve with ant-acid treatment.

Some just crib and tense up and some actually gulp air down.

I had a livery here who cribbed every where, out in the field in the stable, all the time, He was a terrible doer, he lost weight and was a nightmare. Had I known than about ant acids I would certainly have given it a go.

I have a cribber, she seems to only do it on wood but is turned out 24/7 and still does it. I have the vet coming today so will be asking him about the antacids. I think its actually a really unpleasant thing to watch. She gets hold of the wood pulls back tenses her neck and gulps down air, then relaxes. Her teeth are worn down because of it. She does it mostly after eating, while tacking up and after turning back out but at intervals throuhgout the day as well. She has been prevented from doing it in the past but i am letting her at the moment and looking at the cause of it instead. At 14, i doubt she'll stop altogether but it would be nice to think she feels the need to do it a little less.
