Hi, not sure where you are? I think its more common in the states but my friends horse got it earlier this year, they didn't catch it until it was quite a long way progressed, unfortunatly that mare developed a secondary problem and became seriously allergic to something (they tried but never found it) and unfortunatly had to be PTS as she was suffering.
I have heard of many cases of horses recovering, but it seems it is often a very hard and long road.
(((((((((GOOD VIBES))))))))))) coming your way.

It's common in sheep, but rare in horses.

We are in Thetford forest, so have exactly the same problem :( One thing our vet said (to my friend) was that now you know the deer are carrying/spreading it, it is worth trying to prevent.
Checking legs etc of all horses daily is essential, the sooner you remove the tick the less chance of them getting it. Or if you can treat all horses legs periodically with Frontline (the dog flea and tick stuff, we got a big bottle for about £50 from our vet, it has done 3 horses and 2 dogs nearly a year :D) as it keeps the ticks off just the same as it does for dogs (also gets rid of mites and stuff so worth doing).

I hope the drugs do the trick for you :D

Hope your horse makes a full recovery, sending healing vibes! I read an article in HOrse about it recently. I know that humans can get it too - to be honest, it used to put me off walking up at Arnside - apparently, they had an outbreak of it up there, when I say "outbreak" I think some walkers contracted it from the ticks. Eeeek! Fingers crossed for your horse.

:) thanks to you all!!!! alfie has had many ticks on his nose this year but like you said i have removed them very quickly they have been tiny!! and again i already use the frontline as he has lots of feather and i use that for the mites but i think i.ll put more on and in other places??!! the worrying thing is that i have had four on me!!!!!!!!!!!!! think i might go to my gp for a blood test?? I.ll keep asking my vet what he thinks is best i also read that if their immune system is low they are at greater risk and recommend echinacea in liquid form?? might be worth asking my vet, thanks again for the replies i knew i could rely on you for great help and support!!!!!!!!!!! i.ll keep you posted

Oh yeah, echineacia is great for boosting the immune system up, and can be brought over the counter at most feed stores as its a feed supplement (because its a herbal remedy) so is easily available :D
