saw someone write that someone else uses de-tangling spray,
just thought i'd share what i was shown

alot of de-tangling sprays cost quite alot, and my old YO used to put in 'Mr Shhen' polish spray in her horses tail instead of other "proper" stuff.
she put it below the dock tho - just incase it got on skin (i don't think it does much to skin, but her horse was wierd and had reactions to anything undert the sun!)

I use baby oil in a spray can also below the dock it will only work in some trigger sprays though empty human body oil sprays are the best type conb through gives a outstanding shine and lasts

the 'furniture-polish-on-horses' debate has been done a number of times on here. It's not something i would do, especially if the product contained silicon. I use a product by IV Horse called Tangle Buster. Spray it on, leave for 5 minutes then brush through. leaves no nasty residue and smells lovely.

I use one by Cowboy magic. Expensive - £25 for 12oz (maybe 450ml) but lasts a good fortnight and you only use a very small amount.

I find that baby oil make the tail shine really nicely also can help to keep manes on the correct side, also good for you hands in winter, and it also helps the next time you brush the tail as mud, grease etc just slides off. Only thing that can happen is when washing the tail, the shampoo doesnt always lather up.

Just be careful with baby oil particularly on a white tail. You'll have a manky, grey thing that has attracted the dust! Speaking from experience here!
Plus be very careful with baby oil on skin around hot sun!

I wouldn't use furniture polish. I like canter mane and tail stuff.

Because its for polishing furniture with thats why:p :p ! Each to their own, but I wouldn't like to spray it into my hair - besides it doesn't smell that good unless you like your horse smelling of beeswax!!! Oh, and yes, Canter probably has got silicones in it - but they are probably safe to use around horses - at the end of the day, its about £6 a bottle and lasts for a long time, so its well worth paying out for. (I don't work for them honest!!!):)

I got a recipe off NR ages ago that works brilliantly: 1/3 hair conditioner, 1/3 baby oil and 1/3 water. Shake well before spraying.:)
